Sounds a lot like the Squid and the Whale, or even It's Kind of a Funny Story.

Also Bart Got a Room and Hooka Face and the Virgin Boy.

Could be seen as an almost middle class version of Fish Tank! 400 blows allusions included!

"Melody", in some places particularly the main characters' backgrounds, chase scenes and the train track backdrops, although a bit older and darker.

Peckham's boring and flat on Sundays. In fact, England's boring and flat on Sundays.

This Is England - or Somers Town - both have a similar vibe of a teenager trying to find himself while reacting and interacting with those closest to him, sometimes for the worse.

Reminds me a bit of Wes Anderson's Rushmore. 15 year old, egotist protagonist. Some very similar asthetic references too - the use of 'chapters', futura font etc.

Personally i prefer Rushmore but i enjoyed this too!

reminded me of the squid and the whale and rushmore..

if that's not a joke then wow, i really disagree with you, it has nothing to do with Fish Tank

"I thought you were going to save me a piece!"

"Piece was never an option."

Youth In Revolt (2009) starring Michael Cera as a teenager with a crush, escapist fantasies, and a depressingly humorous home life.

Not the same age group but reminded me of Garden State

If you don't want to go on age of the main characters specifically, then just about any Wes Anderson movie.

to me,the way it was filmed, some of the shots were an homage to 60's British and French Films like "The Knack...and How to get It" (1964), "Georgy Girl" (1966), "Breathless" (1960), "The Graduate" (1967) and "Rushmore" and "Harold and Maude"

Kinda dissapointed no one mentioned Deep End (1970) they even had a cardboard with it's name on it in the scene they where directly ripping off from Deep End (or homage whatever you wanna call it).

It reminded me of the 400 Blows by Francois Truffaut.

Definitely check out Wes Anderson films.

Check out a movie called Nói albínói (2003) about a smart teenage outcast living in an isolated village in Iceland. Aside from that, it also reminded me at times of Harold and Maude, Rushmore, and Ghost World.

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

I think a coming of age that is a drama/comedy and quite similar in mood is the very good "Welcome to the dollhouse" by Solondz. Also about quirky teens, awkward love stories, bullism, peer pressure, alienation from parents and siblings... Give that a try:
