Do moviegoers expect all movies to be arthouse/Oscar fare?

Okay, I can understand if people didn't like this movie. It's a movie that one would like or dislike, but isn't that the case for all movies? I remember going to see this in theaters last June and enjoying it. I even bought the movie on Blu-Ray. Is it the greatest movie out there? No, but I still found it entertaining and I liked the visual effects and action. Yes, it could be considered a knock-off of "Independence Day," but what is original these days?

Again, it's okay if one dislikes a movie. I just don't understand why some people act as if their opinions are official facts and if one disagrees, then the person is wrong for it.

To answer your question (in your subject), no of course not.

However there are basic elements that a movie requires for it to be entertaining (which in my mind is what makes a movie "good").

Just like you have movies you dislike (and maybe even hate), so do other people and we judge them on whatever those things are.

For me, the plot can't get in the way of the movie. When it does, there are too many plot holes. They become so large you can't ignore them. Every movie has them, just some movies mask them better than others. Some continually show you the holes over and over, daring you to accept them. :)

The acting can't get in the way of the movie. Not every movie has Oscar caliber actors (well I guess some movies do...), but let's stick to actiony types here. If you have bad actors, spouting cliched, boring, and wooden dialog that a high-school student would write, you can notice those things, and you can't not notice them.

For this movie, the plot holes and the acting just screamed at me throughout the whole movie, completely ruining what was a good looking movie. If the acting was better or if the plot would have been thought about just a bit more, I may have enjoyed it.

I hate IMDB's Signature policy...

I don't expect every movie to have Oscar worthy values!

I do expect basic level competency values.

This dreck didn't even have that!

Considering the way people love to complain about movies they don't like, I think they would find something to complain about no matter how good the movie was. People are not complaining about Battleship because it wasn't a good movie. It was a good movie to the people who liked it. People are complaining about Battleship because they are sad empty souls who can only find happiness in trying to drag down other's enjoyment. IMDB seems to attract this sort of person for some reason.

Saying something is terrible when it is-by all acceptable metrics-terrible is not 'dragging down other peoples enjoyment'; just because some people found enjoyment in something awful does not make something immune from criticism. People liked slavery and Nazis at one point; probably a good many more people than liked Battleship. People are idiots.
