it's really pretty decent
had this movie not been associated with the board game, which people seemingly just couldn't get past, it's really a pretty fun, well-made summer movie. i liked it personally more than Battle LA

shareIt is a fun popcorn movie. It's too bad people get stuck on the board game, but someone who can't get past that probably isn't going to have an opinion worth listening to anyway.

It borrowed some elements from the boardgame.
I'm not sure what people were expecting but this was a fun movie.
It's sad when people bashing this movie are the same people saying about other movies "It's a popcorn movie what do you expect?"
I thought it was interesting how they actually worked the principles of the board game into the movie.
People are just too wound up these days. Sometimes it's just supposed to be a temporary entertainment for 2+ hours.
Granted, Hasbro probably wanted more from a $200 million budget movie, but it's not trash. It just isn't 2001.

Mrs. French's cat is missing...
Boardgame gets a 7 this movie here gets a 4.
shareMuch better than I expected. Deserves at least a 6.5/10.
shareI agree. Good battle flick with mostly no-names. Not wild about the anthropomorphic aliens (yet again) but I suppose Rhianna needs the work for lawsuits and surgery.
I also like the part when Jack and Tokyo Rose jump off the top of the broken ship. Glad they found a piece of flotation that could support them both.
I thought this movie was pretty good. Much better than the last Transformers. And why people are bagging on Rihanna I just don't get. I thought she did pretty good for her first movie role.
I mean, c'mon people, it's a big budget explosions movie. It's exactly what I thought it would be and it was fun. And who cares how stupid the aliens are? We want us to win in the end so we have to be smarter. Duh.
I agree, thought it was good. Not great but you got what you were expecting.
shareFinally got to see it.
Slooooooow start. Nearly 40 minutes blown before things really start.
But once it got rolling it was not too bad really.
Good music. Some ok acting.
CG was all over the place though. Aliens and the craft were well done, but at least one of the ship moments looked unfinished. Otherwise overall not bad.
Aliens looked too human though. Why even bother with CG? They could have about been done with standard prosthetics for a tenth the cost if you left off the digitigrade legs.
As a movie based on a board game though... Kinda failed. Yes there were some nods to the game. I particularly liked the alien shells that look like standard Battleship pegs.
Overall about an average movie. Could have been better. Could have been much worse.
I also enjoyed this movie... shockingly. I really didn't believe it would be good just because so many people bashed it and I didn't like the game I think the real actors all did a good job - Even Rihanna and Brooklyn. The navy guys not so much, but still alright.

can't outrun your own shadow
I think I'm everyone, I went in not expecting too much, and that's about what I got. A decent movie, it was fun and had some good moments. I mean it wasn't Oscar material, but c'mon not every song or movie has to be deep and meaningful, sometimes, they're just fun.
shareJust curious, but what more game associations were you expecting? I thought given a modern world we live in, there isn't much use for actual operating battleships. I thought what they did have was fine. A NOAA buoy weather system making up their pegboard was cool, the shells as you said representing pegs, using an actual battleship, etc.
I'm not sure what more you were expecting...
I thought this movie was fun, not academy worthy but great action and some cool effects. I'd watch it again. ?
shareI agree, this is a good, fun movie. I don't know where they got the comment "based on the Hasbro Game". The movie has nothing to do with the game. The critics for some unknown reason killed this movie. Again it was a fun, good movie. Don't listen to the critics, some of them have agendas.
shareI get more entertainment by watching cartoons .... this movie is sooo terrible bad!! ,... *beep* *beep* scenarios .,,terrible climax .,,. terrible ending ...the worst movie of that year without doubt
shareI, too, think this movie was great fun. Sure, it has a few plot miss-steps; but overall it's a very entertaining piece of film.
Everyone is different so it's pointless trying to give any type of review; because you're guaranteed to have half its readers thinking you're talking rubbish.
I watched this the same day as The Hunger Games and found HG to be a tad on the dull side and a very, very poor adaptation of a very good book.
Whereas, Battleship, had me glued and smiling.
Yes, I found Battleship to be an exhilarating movie in some sense. The final battle still give me some gossebumps when I think about it. For the genre, it was definitely solid writing, CGI, action, acting, pace.
"I don't care what you believe in, just believe in something ! No matter what..."
how exactly is the movie tied to the board game? I haven't watched it yet and I know the film is based on it, but outside of the navy environment and the ship-sinking concept, how else could the movie relate on the board game anyways? does it appear or is mentioned in the film or something?
Frankly it does baffle me a little that Hasbro chose a board game of all the things they have... I would've gone with more toy lines since that's easier to translate to film, for Transformers and G.I. Joe for example, at least there's a mythology and a set of characters and plenty of history to successfully adapt (the overall success of those franchises notwithstanding), but when it comes to a board game, most of those aspects are nonexistent. Hopefully this film's performance makes hollywood reconsider board game adaptations either as a more serious venue or discard the idea completely

There is a grid, created by tsunami buoys, and the aliens have a kind of missile that looks like a peg. And that's it. I wonder if anybody would have noticed the board game link if it hadn't been mentioned by the creators.
Whoa... that's just what I thought it would be. Maybe Battleship is edgy enough to warrant a big screen debut, but I wonder what would they come up with for that infamous monopoly adaptation that has been on "development" or something for some time now, something that actually justifies turning it into a movie... or maybe next they could make a film about UNO and make the cards have special powers and the characters go on a quest to look for them, just to mention how difficult and pointless it is to create stories around board games in a way that is truly engaging and imaginative, and not to mention how silly it will be if the final film flops on box office as well... Too bad that Hollywood has nowhere to rip off these days
