Major suspension of disbelief...then enjoy
The filmmakers took so many liberties with Navy reality, let alone world reality, one can't even begin to take this film with a shred of sincerity or seriousness. It's a parody, if not a farce, a mash up of "Friday Night Lights", (Kitsch and Plemons together again, with the same personalities they portray in FNL), "Down Periscope" (screw up of an officer becomes a hero and gets the girl, we assume), "Independence Day" and a dozen other conquering alien sci fi films. Notice the music was exactly like the 2009 Star Trek film's and the hero is saved by "enlisting" in the Navy.
It is cheap humor, but enjoyable if you don't take it as an insult to your intelligence (or naval service, as the case may be) and you can have a good time spotting all the cliches, rip offs and nods to other films and TV fare.
