According to director, aliens are NOT an evil invading force...

Via an online interview with Battleship director Peter Berg: "There's a group of life forms from some other planet have come to our planet for something. They've got a very specific agenda. That agenda is not global domination. It's an agenda and that agenda puts them into conflict with members of our military."

And...

"The alien race (called The Regents) come from a different planet than us but one with a similar ecology to ours. However, the interesting part is that Battleship will be set apart from most other alien invasion movies in that the aliens aren’t coming down to destroy or take over, but are looking to build a huge power source in the ocean. This “goal” inevitably brings them into conflict with us and our battleships."

Guess that pretty much settles it.

What about the attack on the city, supposedly to take out infrastructure, but taking a few lives in the process?

This at least explains why they were defensive throughout (i.e. only firing when threatened or fired upon) which makes me wonder if it's not a subliminal message about the arrogance and selfishness of US foreign policy!

But they came all this way for what exactly? If you have FTL capability and can the weapons we see them use in the film, they should easily be able to melt ice into water so no need to come to Earth for that, especially if you want to AVOID a confrontation.

Also, what about just first ASKING us for permission? I'm not saying we would've said yes, but they didn't even try. They knew we were intelligent and from the "red" scans of our ships, they knew we were armed, so why not ask nicely first then take bybfirce if necessary?
