A lot of people here are missing the most important point...

to all those who hate this movie because it's the "most ridiculous premise" or "idiotic story" or even "completely unbelievable" (these are just a few of the negative comments. You are missing the point of this film. It's not meant to be serious or accurate.

It's simply made to be fun!

I basically watch every movie with this mindset. I come home from work and watch a movie to be entertained. I come to these boards for fun seeing everyone being so serious about non fiction.

seeing everyone being so serious about non fiction.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

While there are a lot of movies/tv shows that I will nitpick realism & plot holes on, this is not one of them.

It's a popcorn action flick based on a board game. A BOARD GAME!!! It's not supposed to be a handbook on how the military works. You're supposed to cheer the good guys & boo the bad guys & revel in their defeat. You're not supposed to ponder The Mysteries of Life.

Make popcorn, grab a beer, unplug your brain, & enjoy!!!!

Fine, but it's not even "fun".

reply

I have to laugh at some peoples' idea of "fun".

reply

But this wasn't even "fun", it was just a shallow recruitment video for the USA navy.

reply

it was just a shallow recruitment video for the USA navy.
By that logic Stripes (1981) was a recruitment for the Army, and Full Metal Jacket (1987) was a recruitment movie for the Marines. Oh wait...i'm speaking from experience, lol. I did want to go into the Army after watching Stripes, but ended up going in to the Marines, not because of FMJ, but because I was bored after high school and the USMC recruiter called me.

So what. Have you ever been a recruiter or been on recruiter assistance? I have. It's not fun trying to get people into the military. If this movie brought in a few butts, good. I tell you what, the Call of Duty games are probably having more of an impact than this movie ever did. Complain about that why don't you.

Every person that served can be called a veteran, but not every veteran can be called a Marine.

Fun without depth is seen as a travesty to a lot of people, believe it or not. I've been wondering why, maybe they have trouble connecting with their inner child? Maybe they take movies too seriously?

Most of the bitter commenters about this movie... far out... I wouldn't want to see ANY movie with people like that - picking at every little thing without even giving it a chance... just weird to me, you would think they don't want to enjoy themselves or something.

reply

I know, right? To take this movie seriously is pointless. It was not made to be serious at all.

reply

A little defensive, aren't we? I have quite a lot of fun in my life, as do many of the others who criticize this movie.

It's the MOVIE that takes itself too seriously (as does most Michael Bay-influenced disaster porn). I mean, we're supposed to get all choked up over the "patriotism" here! Sure, I can laugh AT the movie...but a little self-awareness and tongue-in-cheek humor might have helped here. That is to say, intentional humor. That works.

Thinking people have to love mindless movies to have fun or enjoy life is...mindless.

reply

Nah, I'm not that defensive. I honestly did not think I would enjoy the film before I watched it. I've just seen too many people on IMDB boards who take everything too seriously, and perhaps was a bit brash.

Watching a video of someone farting can be fun but not if he spends a quarter of a billion dollars making it.
