Little mistakes they could have fixed

The one that I noticed that bothered me was the night Sam died, which was supposed to be in 2005. The Boston Red Sox clip that they showed with him watching the game featured Dustin Pedroia, but Pedroia didn't play for the Boston Red Sox until 2006. They easily could have picked a clip from the night he died, or at least the same summer.

There are lots of little mistakes that others have picked up on. All of them little and could have easily been fixed. If they just paid a little bit more attention, the film would have been better with a higher rating. Everytime there's some mistake which a viewer picks up on, it lowers their opinion of the movie by at least a star. At least I think so, and subconsciously at least.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the book, so if there's info I'm missing please forgive my error.

But Sherwood wrote this book in 2004.
Sam died 14 years before the adult Charlie meets Tess in "present day"

Subtract 14 years from 2004 and you get 1990.
Therefore the date of Sam's death is 1990, or perhaps slightly earlier. The same night they saw the Red Sox game.

Or did I misunderstand something?

Lots of changes were made from the book to the movie. You are, however, correct. The first chapter or so takes place in 1990.

Sam's gravestone documents the dates of his birth and death. I believe it indicates that he died in 2005.

That's according to the movie, not the book.
