Differences between the book and film
With the book vs movie section from wikipedia removed due to lack of sources, I thought I'd post the list here:
The book is set in Marblehead, Massachusetts, while the film takes place in the town of Quincy, Washington on Puget Sound (filming was in Vancouver). Sam's obsession with the Red Sox was maintained in the movie, however.
Oscar—Charlie and Sam's pet beagle—who also shares Sam's fate is omitted. So is Tiny Tim, a turtle that lives in the forest lake where Charlie and Sam play.
The settings are moved from 1991 and 2004 to 2005 and 2010, with a few Edwardian references. With the film thus shortening the book's 13 year time span to 5 years.
Charlie's friend, Joe "the Atheist" Carabino, is renamed Alistair Wooley, while his mother Louise is renamed Claire. Tess' father, George is renamed Ben, and Florio Ferrente's wife Francesca, Carla.
Charlie's former girlfriend, Margie is replaced by Alistair's wife, Cindy.
Before the accident, Charlie and Sam are heading for a graduation party, whereas in the book they were returning from Red Sox game against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.
The book doesn't mention Charlie and Sam being rear-ended by an SUV and describes Charlie ramming the car into an 18-wheeler while chasing the moon.
Charlie and Sam's accident in the book took place on the General Edwards drawbridge in Lynn, Massachusetts, not at an intersection as seen in the movie.
In the book, Charlie and Sam borrow their neighbor, Mrs. Norman Pung's 1991 Ford Country Squire. In the film, they borrow their mother's 1996 Ford Taurus. Both are Ford station wagons.
Charlie and Florio's conversation takes place earlier before his death from cancer, in the book Florio is said to have died in a "hellish three-alarm".
Charlie and Tess' consummating takes place in the graveyard rather than in the cottage bedroom as it is only one story high.
Timothy Patrick Sullivan, a character specifically created for the film and portrayed by James Franco's real life brother Dave Franco, takes over the role of Charlie's teacher Mrs. Ruth Phipps.
In the book, Louise St. Cloud works at a Penni's market, in the film she works as a nurse.
In the book, Sam is kinder to Tess, taking her to many places and interacting with her about his relationship with Charlie, less of this occurs in the film.
In the book, Charlie's scholarship aims for Dartmouth or Princeton University, yet after Sam's death he attends Salem State College. In the film, it is unknown if Charlie had attended a nearby university due to the relocation of the story.
In the book, Charlie first meets Tess in the cemetery. In the film, this occurs earlier at the dock on her boat.
It is said that Tess' around-the-world boat race will take 6 months, in the book it was 4 months.
Fraffe Chapman, the head of the historical society and an antagonist to Charlie who appeared in the book as well as an early shooting draft, is omitted from the completed film.
Palmer Guidry, Charlie's boss at Waterside Cemetery, is also ommitted
Sam is able to change his wardrobe in the book, yet he remains dressed in white shirt, red jacket, blue pants and red and white shoes in the film.
In the book, Florio Ferrente's St. Jude medallion is gold, in the film it is silver.
In the book, Charlie and Tink eventually find Tess' boat wrecked before going back to where he finds out that she can see Sam. In the film, Charlie invesigates the boat before finding Tess' body.
In the book, Charlie and Sam had two fathers for each one of their births, a carpenter and a bail bondsman. In the film, it is implied that Charlie and Sam had only one father who stayed with them longer and tried playing for the Red Sox in Pawtucket, providing a different explanation for the brothers' Red Sox obsession due to the relocating of the story's setting to British Columbia.
In the book, Sam helps Charlie point out Tess' location as a nimbus cloud, rather than a shooting star in the movie.
In the book, Charlie is 15 years old in the beginning and 28 later on in the major events of the story, he holds no interest in sailing and has caramel eyes with floppy blonde hair, freckles and a mischevious dimple. In the film, Charlie is 17 and 22 with blue eyes and dirty blonde hair, most likely due to Zac Efron's age.
In the book, Sam is 12 years old with curly hair. In the movie, he is 11 with flat hair. According to Burr Steers, Charlie Tahan was 11 during filming and had to be rewritten a year younger, thus making Sam's age nearly accurate to the novel.
After visting Sam one last time in the book, Charlie reunites with Tess in the Mary Alley Hospital and tells them the story of how they met. In the film, Charlie buys a boat for her and advices her to take a chance.
In the book's ending, Sam appears to Charlie one last time as the man he hoped he would be. In the movie's ending, Sam stays the same age and Charlie can no longer seem to see him.
Please inform me of any other differences between the book and the movie that I did not recive while making this list.
