I'm amazed that no one has actually yet asked how accurate is this movie - does anyone know if it actually bears any resemblance to the truth ?

Believe it or not, the plot was based on a doctoral dissertation by Rachel Maines. There's a regular book based on her thesis, which I read about five years ago: The Technology of Orgasm: "Hysteria," the Vibrator, and Women's Sexual Satisfaction (Johns Hopkins University Press, $22). And yes, it's true: back in the late 19th perfectly respectable women used to go to doctors for this purpose.
shareWell Mortimer Grandville invented the vibrator but everything else surrounding him in this movie is false I think, is it not?
