So is this like a prequel to Secretary?

With her great, great, great grandmother or something?

Because thats what it sounds like.

reply

Ummm no.

During the Victorian period, doctors treated women suffering from "hysteria" with vibrators.

When the vibrator emerged as an electromechanical medical instrument at the end of the nineteenth century, it evolved from previous massage technologies in response to demand from physicians for more rapid and efficient physical therapies, particularly for hysteria. Massage to orgasm of female patients was a staple of medical practice among some (but certainly not all) Western physicians from the time of Hippocrates until the 1920s, and mechanizing this task significantly increased the number of patients a doctor could treat in a working day. Doctors were a male elite with control of their working lives and instrumentation, and efficiency gains in the medical production of orgasm for payment could increase income. Physicians had both the means and the motivation to mechanize.

Yeah I know what its about. I was just pointing out that Maggie seems to be in quite a few kinky projects.

reply

Oh my, yes. Female orgasms and stimulation by vibrators is the epitome of kinky. ;)

I take it you don't like the actress? You're so very good at hiding it. ;) I don't care one way or the other, really. I take issue at female orgasms or female sexuality being considered "nasty skanky" or kinky. And you might not be aware, but you are in charge of the movies you watch. I certainly haven't ever been "forcibly exposed" to a movie before. If the movie sucks, I shut it off or walk out of the theater. Give it a try.

The only other movie I have seen with Maggie being lightly dressed in Secretary. Prior to that I saw her star in Donnie Darko as Donnie's sister and the girlfriend in Stranger Than Fiction.

Honestly, I like her. A lot. Both as a private person (at least that conveyed in interviews) and on screen. She is fun to watch and a great actress. She is also smart. If you read interviews about her thoughts of Hysteria, she muses a bit over the differences between male and female orgasms and why one is taboo while the other is not. She also says that she was surprised over the audience's reaction. To me, this rather indicates that maybe Maggie is on a level of independent woman that we have yet to see within the main mainstream.

That she may star in roles where women find themselves through sexual liberation I think is a refreshing way to view female empowerment. I rather much prefer these romantic comedies over the ones where you find Julia Roberts fussing over her wedding dress and whom she should get married to. If you want to rack down on murky gender stereotypes, these Hollywood movies are the ones you should look down upon. Maggie tends to play females on the completely opposite side of the spectrum, because she is actually genuinely interested in helping people to experience different sides of female emancipation. And I really appreciate her for doing that.

Then one can further discuss whether sexual liberation is just another aspect of women being controlled by the system by categorizing these women in the "whore" definition than the "virgin" one, but at least Maggie tries, as opposed to Julia Roberts. If there was a list of chick flicks (or whatever you want to call them) that are about women's liberation, Mona Lisa Smile would definitely not be on that list, whereas Secretary would.

My 2 cents.

Try seeing a TV movie called Strip Search (2004), Maggie is more than just "being lightly dressed" in there.

I used to be a big fan of hers until I realised she was pro-fur. Standing up for her "right" to wear fur versus the right of furry animals not to be trapped or caged ... not as enlightened as she wants us to think she is.

She's still very sexy. But I don't approve of where she is coming from, as an individual.

folks all over the world have been forcibly exposed to her va-jay-jay more than any other legit actress.

I am very sorry that you were forced to watch films against your will and not allowed to close your eyes. It must have been horrible and I hope you are now free of your oppressor.

However, I think you will find that in Secretary, what you unwillingly saw was a va-va-va (vulva) rather than a va-jay-jay (vagina).

I have never seen the movie Secretary, and in fact I had never heard of it until I saw it on you IMDB page. But to add something I forgot to put in the PM, I also saw Iron Lady in late January, and it was about Margaret Thatcher's career. She was played in this movie by Meryl Streep, who won the Oscar for Best Actress. In this movie they showed scenes from the Falkland Islands War, which was fought between the UK and Argentina from April to June, 1982, over these islands. This is the 30th anniversary of this war, and I remember hearing about it very well in 1982, I was 14 and around the end of 8th grade. That would have also been the case with you, so I was wondering if you remember it, and if anyone you knew fought in it.

Sorry about the delay in replying! I remember the Falklands War well, although was fortunate enough not to know anyone who was going to fight in it. That would have worried me a lot.

Mrs Thatcher was quoted as saying that the wishes of the islanders were paramount. She meant the Falkland Islands (known as the Malvinas to the Argentinian soldiers). People did wonder why she didn't seem to put the wishes of the islanders of the UK so highly on her list of priorities, as she was VERY unpopular with large sections of the population.

A family member did go to Iraq in 2003 for 3 months, something to do with the medical branch of the Territorial Army, and that was very difficult for her children.

Secretary is a great film.

I've never once seen her vagina. What movies are you referring to?

reply

Kind of the opposite. While the character in Secretary was a bottom, Gyllenhal's character in Hysteria is definitely a top.

reply

Secretary was actually a good movie, and a funny one.

Hysteria is a feel-good, safe, boring movie filled with groan humor. It's kind of incredible that this kind comedy is still being made, but I imagine grandmothers (speaking of which) will find it enjoyable and "raunchy".

reply

Of course it's not, you muppet.
