I will admit that it was rather sad when Pepper the dog was killed since I am guessing it was the entity that was responsible for it.

I found it really sad too. Yes, it was the entity that was responsible.
It killed the dog because it mattered to the Ashley Greene character; that's why it killed the cactus too.... it was slowly breaking her down breaking her spirit.

The dog gave the best acting performance in the movie by simply pretending to die on cue.
