I just saw the trailer and all the way through it I was wondering why they don't just use explosives. So my quastion is do they?

shareThey do not. It's mentioned that they thought about it, but they couldn't because explosives would kill other wildlife in the ocean.
shareThanks for the answer!
I thought it might be something like that. Not sure how accurate that claim is in real life, but at least in heartwarming movie it does make sense :D
Although I certainly agree that blowing breathing holes would have caused a nasty shockwave that could have injured the whales and other animals I wonder why they didn't use explosives for the pressure ridge. Apparently that was 5 miles away from the whales and honestly the whales were clearly the top priority.

Because there could have been hundreds (or even thousands) of fish or other animals that could have been killed or injured by the shock wave from the explosion that WERE close to the pressure ridge?
shareGood answer Trump but I think we all know that people only care about cute animals.

Whales and dolphins are incredibly sound sensitive. Many dolphins and whales in captivity engage in behaviors such has banging their heads against their tanks because of noise from the arena and crowds. When they first took dolphins in captivity they couldn't keep them alive because the sound of the filters was literally killing them. Even now US navy sonar has shown to be killing and or harming whales and dolphins. Explosives would have caused the animals to panic and most likely kill themselves. At the end of the movie you notice when the ship hits the ice barge they immediately turn and swim away? It's because of the sound.
