why didn't the Eskimos just eat the whales?
I know it would've been a shorter film, but they do eat whale so why not?

Actually, that was talked about in the beginning. In the movie the local whalers decide that it would be negative publicity to be seen killing the whales, and so help rescue them instead.
shareEver heard about stranded whales in Japan? Nah, me neither. If this story had happened in Japan at one point there would have been footage of the whales sliding magically across the top of the ice towards the town, then someone would lift up one of the whales tails and notice that under each whale is 100 cheerful Japanese folk with hungry smiles - carrying the whales like ants carrying a dead mouse.
