Started out edgy, ended up preachy

I really enjoyed the edginess and darkness of the first 4 seasons. The writers didn't seem to be afraid to tackle any subject, and tackle it well. But starting in season 5 the mood changed and the subtle power turned into bludgeoning/being beaten over the head by a dogmatic PC agenda. And/or worse...Gently's character became less and less sympathetic, and more and more unrealistic and hypocritical. Shame...this had been a truly exceptional show up until then.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with you about the show getting too PC. I still like it and hope it continues but I do hope they knock off the obvious liberal agenda... Or at least tone it down a little.

Another former fan chiming in "Agreed," and with intense disappointment. I *loved* the show for the 1st 3 seasons *bc* it was dark. (I'm not eager to see any agenda, even one that I-as-political-progressive agree with, so clearly displayed. It's sloppy writing, and it makes for poor drama.)

The Dr. Blake mysteries, from Australia, are even worse re: bludgeoning viewers with A Message (and a hyper-tolerant message that doesn't ring true to provincial 1950s Australia AT ALL); if you haven't watched 'em, DON'T.
