In the first season they say it takes place in Boston, but I believe at one point someone said Providence, Rhode Island? I could be mistaken. Either way, it looks like neither of those places.

Yeah, the 1st season made it a little more obvious that it was in Canada, but nothing has ever been said specifically.

I guess I may be thinking of Being Human, the other show on SyFy channel that aired around the same time as Lost Girl.
But, I could have sworn in the first season someone mentions Boston. I guess I'm wrong.
The only hint at their location I remember in Season 1 is when Kenzi says they have to go south of the border to stop the execution in episode 8.
In a more recent season, Kenzi talks about paying "Hydro." I don't know a lot about equivalent American terminology. Is that what electrical bills are called over there?

Yeah Hydro is a company that delivers electricity in Ontario Canada, and Québec Canada... It is short for Hydro Electricity, which is Canadian's main energy resource. Anyway clearly it is in Canada. It is not specifically mentioned, but IMO it's in a make up town like many other shows.

In the episode with the spider fae they mention that one of Lauren's lab assistants is a harpy of the Boston harpies, that might be what you're thinking of. I'm watching through the series on Netflix and watched that one yesterday. :D
