First Impressions: 44 Minutes to Save the World (SPOILERS)

Let me reiterate this: there will be spoilers in this post. If you have not seen the newest episode of Lost Girl do not read.

Next, let me thank Tristen for posting that YouTube link, I wouldn't have been able to see the episode early with out it.

- Dyson and Lauren were more chill than I thought they would be upon meeting Hades.

- A little surprised to see Tamsin so well, after the lightning strike. Thought there would be more too that (though I guess, there still could be more to come).

- Not to surprised to see Hera and Zeus go at it. They never got along all that much in Greek mythology either, if I recall correctly.

- Speaking of Zee, she is still a great bad guy. I wonder how she will try to keep her plan going without Iris.

- I was certain that Mark would survive by having his first Wolf-shift, but that prediction was wrong. I appreciate the avoidance of that particular cliche.

- Personally, I thought Eric Roberts was great as Hades. Looking forward to seeing more of him in the next 7 episodes.

- Really looking forward to hearing his side of the story. I'm glad that it appears to be more complicated than what Aife said. (Can't wait to see her again too).

- Looking forward to how the whole Pyripuss thing from Season 4 is explained too.

- I guess those eagle eyed observers really were on too something after that trailer came out. Lauren really made a dramatic choice. Wonder what after shocks her transformation will create.

- Glad to see Dyson and Alicia still together. Dyson could really use someone to make him officially move on from Bo.

I really enjoyed this episode, it really got me looking forward to watching Lost Girl again after such a long break. I wasn't surprised by the new developments, due to the trailer, but it was a nice twist anyway. Where was this type of writing over the last couple years? Would have helped. I give it an A, and hopefully they can keep it up, because if they do, we should be in for a heck of a final few episodes. To those who have seen it, what did you think?

I actually thought this episode was overall TOO CHILL after what had happened in episode 8.
It's been so long since I've seen the previous episode that I just didn't notice that, but I do recall that 5x08 seemed more intense.
Tamsin immediately being ok was kinda surprising
I agree. I never thought she was dead, but I thought there would be more to it than shown so far. They could still be building up to something though, I guess.
I love Zee and Hades
Yeah, they are pretty awesome. Hades needs to be good, after the long wait we had to sit through. He was great in this episode, so far so good.
Mark .. Blahhhhh
Couldn't put it better myself.
How will The Morrigan react when she finds out Lauren has turned herself Fea ?? God !!! That is going to be a great scene. I hope they show it.
I hadn't thought of that, that would be a great scene. I'm wondering if Hades and Aife will reunite too.

This was a fill in the blank episode and not really, I think, a good choice to have held off on airing for as long as they did. If they wanted something that felt like a cliffhanger to keep everyone interested, they should have chosen this one to air months ago and kept everyone waiting for what would happen now that Lauren has used Bo's DNA to make herself fae.

I'm not sure how I feel about that plot twist, BTW. First, Hades offered her the answer to finding Bo's cells that make her fae and he had to have known what she was going to do with them. So did he help to help or was it a manipulation that he knows will do damage later? Yet even after Lauren finds out who he is, she still apparently still took his advice. Second, When could she possible have had time? He told her and then Bo showed up and it was only a few hours later that they found Iris, got rid of the nyx, and they were on their lovers walk... Third, it feels like a cheat. Especially if this happens without any consequence. Plus, the entire scene with Lauren in the street was awkward and it didn't take long for people to speculate that Lauren actually got hit on purpose just so she could show Bo her new powers, which if true is a really cruel thing to do to someone. All Aife had to do to make Bo realize she was a succubus was a quick peck. I don't think she wanted to get hit, but something hinky is going on. There is no reason that Lauren would be that stupid to just stand in a street, specifically ignoring Bo's plea for her to get out of the street just to talk about pizza.

But I also agree that everyone was just a little too chill and Tamsin's back and forth with Horatio was good, she was off in every other scene. Way to calm back at the clinic, especially.

I don't think Dyson should tell Alicia about the fae. If they get her husband back then she has a chance at a normal life again. If they can't get her husband back, the she still has a chance at a normal life. But if she finds out about the fae then someone has to claim her and all bets are off. Bo didn't know what she was doing when she claimed Kenzi, what that could mean for Kenzi. Dyson knows. Bringing her into the fae world is cruel. So, no, I hope he doesn't tell her a thing.

I love Eric Roberts as Hades. His version of the story fits with what we already know. Aife never said that Bo's father tortured her. She said it was the Dark King. When Bo asked about her father her face changed and she said she didn't want to talk about it. The way she spoke about him at Taft's was not someone afraid of him, but wishing he was there. When he says he sent Bo away, he means with Luann, so her part finally makes sense.

Very few episodes of Lost Girl have provided a timeline. One of these few was episode 5x08 (End of Faes) when Mark asked Lauren why she couldn't turn Zee and Heratio into humans as she had done with the Morrigan, and Lauren responded "That process took months. Isolating each Fae chromosome...."

If we suspend our imaginations -- as this fantasy series expects us to -- Lauren has been working on her human/Fae/human research for a long time, which is how she figured out how to turn Dr. Taft into a Fae hybrid (season 3), followed by procuring The Morrigan's DNA to turn her into human (season 4).

If you go back to episode 5x03 (Big in Japan), wherein Bo hasn't been able to feed from anyone, you might recall the scene of her in the lab with Lauren. Lauren is serious when she looks at Bo and says to her "Why don't you let a medical professional help you heal?" and when Bo resists, Lauren says to her "Trust me." Bo wouldn't go through with it and leaves.

I believe Lauren had already transformed herself by this time, but she was waiting for the right moment to reveal it to Bo.

The scene of her and Hades discussing her R&D on molecules, adenovirus, and adhesion has nothing to do with Lauren becoming Fae (or probably a Fae/human hybrid). Lauren has always played her cards close to her chest. She told Bo in 5x07 (Here Comes the Night) "I know what I'm doing...conducting research...none of this has anything to do with turning Evony Fae again." I believe that the formula on the chart that she's working on is to save Bo from herself, because the first time Bo went super-ballistic Dark Bo was in 3x05 (Faes Wide Open) and Lauren realized at that moment that something very wrong was happening to Bo.

Other than a snark remark by Kenzi about Bo and Saskia creating a "black hole" if they had sex with each other, there has been no mention in any episode about the possibility and manageability of two succubi together.

I don't necessarily think Lauren has transformed herself into a complete succubus. Considering what she has achieved with both human and Fae, she could have created something entirely new and different for herself.

We'll just have to wait and see. 😉

I mean when did Lauren have time to initiate Hades fix to what she was doing and administer it to herself? Even with suspension of belief, Hades told her that day, Hades, BTW, who she thinks is the epitome of evil), and she decides that while Bo is out risking her life trying to stop the end of the entire world is the best time to get her chemistry set out? It's bad timing and it doesn't flow at all.

reply

What in that scene supports your assumption that it was the formula that she administered to herself?

What if the formula on the board is the formula Lauren has been working on since 3x05 (Faes Wide Shut), when she told Bo after Bo went Super Dark Bo that she was still "fine-tuning the formula for your injections" because, as she said to her in 3x04 (Fae-de To Black), the "shots aren't working anymore."

I said in my previous comment that I believe Lauren was already transformed by 5x03 (Big In Japan) because of the scene in the lab where she told Bo to feed from her and to trust her.

Lost Girl is not and never has been a series that lays it all out in a paint-by-numbers manner. But clues have always been given in the dialog.

And what makes you believe that she used Bo's DNA to transform herself into a succubus? In 1x02 (Where There's a Will, There's A Fae) -- the first time Bo went to Lauren for help in controlling her hunger -- Lauren told Bo that she had developed something for an incubus she had treated. What if Lauren created a formula for herself from that?

The fact that she was working with cells that attacked any virus, which Bo's (or Aife's) would with their healing powers. And Hades saying the formula she was working on is practically the fountain of youth. Plus, if Lauren had turned herself fae before this Dyson would have smelled it and Bo would have been able to tell. She can tell if someone is fae, as the show has demonstrated.

And Lauren is chi-sucking Bo at the end in the manner of a succubus so it is either her or Aife's and not some random incubus that Lauren mentioned once 4 seasons ago or any other type of fae. The writers are not keen on subtlety. Lauren used Bo's DNA, Hades helped her figure out the formula, Lauren used it on herself. It all fits with all of the heavy anvil hints in the episode.

As for the injections Lauren was working on in season 3, those were for pre-Dawning Bo. She doesn't need that anymore so there is no reason for Lauren to still be working on it.

My current theory takes him mentioning the Trojan Horse to heart. Bo's DNA comes from him. We see Lauren at the end taking Bo's chi in the same manner as her. But we know that Hades can take chi as well, as was depicted in that painting that freaked Trick out and what Evony said after Kenzi let it spill Bo could do that. So what if Lauren isn't just a succubus, but she's like Hades and perhaps he "helped" her finish her formula knowing what she was attempting so in a way he created another "Dark Queen" and if there is a fate in store for Bo because of her unique combination of fae powers, now he can sacrifice Lauren instead. Or perhaps he's looking for a replacement to take over in the Underworld and Lauren's a back up. I highly doubt it was just to do Bo a favor, despite what he says. (It's not my best theory.)

It was an interesting read. While I did enjoy this episode, the truck scene was certainly rather ridiculous.

What did I think? I think these Fae "gods" are a bunch of pansies. That's what I think. Give me the kind of power that these Fae "gods" supposedly have and I'll show you the true meaning of fear.
