First Impressions: Family Portrait (Spoilers)

Alright, I just finished the most recent episode, 5x13, and a lot happened in it. So here are some of my initial thoughts:

- I'll begin with the biggest thing: Jack killed Trick. I always liked Trick as a character, even if he was a very flawed one. Sorry to see him go.

- Aife wasn't as big of a character, but I was sorry to see her die too. She was excellent in Season 1, and entertaining in her following appearances as well.

- It was good to see Aife again though but, while she did have some moments, she didn't have a ton of time in this episode.

- Tamsin is pregnant now too. Fellow poster Tristen correctly predicted this one last week, and any number of things can result of this turn of events.

- I assume Jack has a specific purpose in mind for another kid. Like Trick said he used Aife so he could have Bo. Does he see something special with Tamsin too?

- I'm guessing it will get clearer in the coming weeks, but I don't get Jack's plan right now.

- Bo finally had it out with Trick about his hiding things from her, it was quite overdue honestly. I generally liked Trick, but that was a bad habit of his.

- Looks like Bo is catatonic like the old lady in the institute, maybe this is why Kenzi comes back? To get her out of it?

I rather enjoyed this episode. It did a lot, and finally got around to showing Jack as the evil-doer we've known he was for the last 3 years or so. It truly was sad to see Trick die though. I was hoping that there would be no more major character deaths, as I liked all the ones left, but I thought there would be at least 1 this season. I wish Aife had more lines too, but this episode did allow her to come full circle. From villain in Season 1 to a fully tragic figure now. I felt they did a better job with her in this regard than they did Trick. I'll give this episode a B, and I can't wait for what looks to be an exciting final 3 episodes.

I liked the episode too, but the video kept glitching on me and getting interrupted by ads, so maybe my enthusiasm would be higher had I watched it on a better site. I'll re-watch it later somewhere else.

You're prediction is very ambitious, but I can see it happening or something close to it anyway. It's not bad. Either way, the final 3 episodes look to be exciting. I can't wait.

I think they're probably done with the deaths. And it might even be that Bo wakes up from her catatonic state, goes Dark and tries to take enough chi from whoever is around to revive Trick and Aife, triggering her descent into the Dark Queen. Both times previous when she went all Galadriel it was after being pushed by grief to save someone she loved. In those cases she was able to come back to herself quickly, but Hades is free now and ready to pounce when she steps over that line again. Or not. Who knows with this show. I suspect they won't walk back Trick's death though. The oracle vision of his wife did say they'd be together soon. So I've been expecting him to die before the end of the season.

I feel bad for Bo that she didn't figure out Hades could make himself appear as her early enough to tell Aife she wasn't crazy. Each time they encountered each other it was filled with trauma or crisis. She never got to know her mother as a person. Would have been nice to have had an episode where Trick was telling Bo stories about Aife. But I have to call baloney on the idea that Bo thought Aife was dead this whole time, or that Dyson and Kenzi knew Trick had Aife in an asylum. (I'm also calling baloney on Bo's anger at it. Uh, did she forget that Aife is a complete psycho?? Of course she belongs in an asylum!) First, Bo shoved a chair leg in her mother's gut and watched her walk away. She was alive when she went with Tamsin at Taft's. Bo was not reacting like someone that just watched their mother, (even an estranged one), die in front of them. And if she thought her mother was going to die, she wouldn't leave her so she could die in the arms of a cabot fae she just met. It just felt like they realized they needed something to distance Dyson and Kenzi from Bo so she would feel completely alone and it was just as annoying as when in S3 they had Lauren lie about Bo's health to her but tell Trick instead. No way Lauren, as a doctor, would lie to Bo about concerns she had she was ill. But they needed everyone to be "against" Bo so Tamsin could be the surprising ally to find Kenzi in that episode and couldn't be bothered to come up with something that fit the character or her arc at that time and they didn't this time either. But I get what they were trying to do so I'm letting it go for now. Because the rest of the episode was very effectively done to really evoke just how much horror Hades can inflict and what they gang is really up against. And random girl moment, but loved Bo's hair down and simple. Wish they'd gone that route more, like in the original pilot. But woulda coulda shoulda.

I'm not sure how I feel about the pregnancy. Glad the show finally had someone react appropriately to a sexual assault. Too bad it happened in an episode where while they acknowledge what happened to Tamsin was a violation they then double down on the "seduction" label for what Aife did to Dyson. But, I get that Tamsin would be conflicted. She would finally have a real family of her own, but at the same time it's with someone so vile. (Not that I think Hades will be around for much longer...) But, she does know Bo and Bo is also Hades so that will probably influence her decision. Or, they're going to go ridiculous and the thing Tamsin is carrying is that stupid flaming horse. (This is a show about mystical creatures, so it could happen. Oh please don't let it happen though.)

The King is dead. Long live the Queen... you know, when she gets her mind back.

The show has always had a bizarre perspective on morality when it comes to certain characters, Aife and Evony in particular seem to get their horrible crimes glossed over on a regular basis.

At times I wonder if that could be because of a level of sexism in the writing, but it happened to a lesser extent with Vex and Trick too, so maybe not.
