First Impressions: Follow the Yellow Trick Road

Alright, I just finished the most recent episode of Lost Girl, 5x14. While not as eventful as last week's, some interesting stuff happened in it nevertheless. Some initial thoughts:

- The "Wizard of Oz" dream sequence is not exactly the most original plot device ever, but it was fairly well done anyway. I enjoyed it.

- Dream Tamsin was awesome. She made me laugh more than a few times.

- Dyson as the "Cowardly Lion" was great too. The "like the vacuum cleaner?" line made me laugh as well.

- Felt like some of the more dramatic scenes (Dyson feeling guilty, Lauren feeling frustrated) were a little forced. Not a bad idea, just not very well executed, probably the fault of poor writing.

- "You can't ignore it" "Don't call yourself an it, you're a person" It came at a more serious time, but that line made me laugh too.

- Tristen, you were right again about Tamsin's pregnancy, it is going quick.

- Mark is back, ugh. Now equipped with a douchey beard.

- Vex is back too. Admitting he is sorry about the crimes he has committed, I think too little too late, but let the character come full circle. He had a few good lines too.

- Yay! Kenzi's back! She didn't have much to do in this episode, but I'm always happy to see my favorite character.

- Why did Jack invite Kenzi back? Because she stopped his 1st attempt to get out of Tartarus? Or does he just want to get all of Bo's friends at once? Seems like it could be a mistake, it will just make Bo fight that much harder.

- Dyson getting the Dal was just right. He'll make a good owner for it.

- I'm assuming Jack took Tamsin for her baby, right?

- Don't know if Vex will actually die from his injury, but I will be fairly sad at the loss of one of the shows most entertaining characters. He did sort of earn it though with his years of murdering.

Overall, while not advancing the main story much at all, I found this episode to be rather charming and funny. I'll give it a B+ maybe an A-. While somewhat bittersweet, I still can't wait for the final 2 episodes. Looks like they'll be eventful.

If he were to have really been killed he couldn't be in one of promos that was released for the second half of Season 5, where he's wearing high heels (the same high heels Paul Amos wears in the group publicity photo where everyone is wearing formal black attire). It's the street scene promo shot in front of an underpass where you see the gang with their backs towards the camera, preparing to fight the crazies coming towards them. I saw it in another forum and there are .gifs on tumblr about it.

Should be noted about the Wizard of Oz sequence:

Bo is Dorothy.
Tamsin is Toto.
Dyson is the Cowardly Lion.
Lauren is the Scarecrow.

Not sure what two-faced Vex is supposed to be.

reply

I think Tamsin is the Tin Man, not Toto. She had a broken heart aka needed a heart like Tin Man

reply

You're correct. I was thrown by the publicity picture with Bo and Tamsin, together, in a green field facing the horizon, and the "T" in Thomasina.

reply

It's been awhile since I've seen the promos, but from that it looks like you are right. Looks like he makes it.

I liked the concept but I found myself bored and fast forwarding through a lot of the scenes.

I agree with Mark being a snoozefest.

I really hope Vex hasn't died. I feel like they are killing off characters too quickly. They deserve better endings.

reply

I really hope ves lives, I would like to see a more of Vex and Marc[Mark?] together.

I generally enjoyed it, but a few of the scenes were a little poorly paced, like the one with the mirrors.

The biggest issue of timing for me is the fact that this episode takes place apparently many days after the events of the Family Portrait, where last we saw Bo she was pretty much catatonic, but they threw in a random fae of the week to explain her coma this week. I don't really understand the order of events. Did Dyson bring Bo home, get her in bed, get Lauren to bring her stuff to Bo's place and hook her up, then arrange a funeral, have the funeral, and *then* Bo got bit by the moth? So was she catatonic the entire time and then a random moth showed up and bit her, carried in by one of them from Trick's memorial? WTF!

How hard would it have been to make the fae of the week actually have a purpose besides to explain something that already happened? I mean, Hades is free. In a previous episode Freya was on the run because other fae thought she could lure him back to Tartarus, which means that other fae are not happy that he is free. Either because he's a threat to whatever they've got going, or just because he's hella scary and evil. The fae also know that Bo has been their champion before, and that she's in the middle of all of this. Since this dream that Bo walked through ended with her finally accepting that Trick was gone, the part where the Kenzi vision as the manifestation of the fae itself doesn't really fit. Because Kenzi is telling Bo how to defeat Hades. Or was trying to. She's trying to help Bo. Why not have that be on purpose? Demonstrate that finally Bo has other fae on her side besides her screwed up found family? And make the fae of the week not random?

Also, I found it amusing that Trick had such an updated will that only included our heroes. But that's par for the course on TV. Just cracks me up that he even included Vex. Or that he'd give Lauren his books. Regardless of how Trick's attitude towards humans might have changed, fae law is still pretty clear about the danger of their existence getting out and giving any human pretty much an index of every fae makes zero sense. They already put the books in play for Lauren to discover whatever she's bound to discover by having Vex and Mark have the presence of mind to bring them to Bo's. But handing them over to anyone not fae is completely counter to his responsibility as Ash, which is to protect all fae. Woulda been nice if he had a second ring like the one he gave Kenzi instead. Or some fae object that is also medicinal. But I guess he updated his will before Tamsin got pregnant because I don't think she's going to be much more wandering around and sleeping under the stars with a child to take care of. And I really do wonder if the compass that Vex got his an actual purpose and isn't just symbolic.

I kinda enjoyed this episode and I kinda was pissed too. It seemed like a filler episode. I think they did the Wizard of Oz Fea version well. Just not sure what it all means in the grand scheme of things. I loved Lola. Funny.

2 episodes left. Kinda thinking the finale will be a miss instead of a hit.

reply

I don't think any other finales have been a hit. I've been burned for being optimistic every time before. But somehow I'm still doing it anyway because this is their last one.

reply

Yeah, I sort of felt that way too. The episode was enjoyable, I liked it, but didn't do much to move things forward. Which is a little irksome this close to the end. I looked past that however, something which I've gotten better at.

I forgot to mention Lola. I agree, she was funny.

Kinda thinking the finale will be a miss instead of a hit.
When has Lost Girl ever disappointed anyone?... More seriously, my expectations are not that high. I'm kind of excited nevertheless though.
