WHY IS LOST GIRL BEING CANCELLED?
And what happened to Bo's mother?
Lost Girl was probably cancelled mostly due to it's ratings, which have declined quite a bit over the last few years.
The fate of Bo's mom has not yet been revealed (as far as I remember), we'll have to wait till the last 8 episodes air to find that out.
I don't think it was cancelled it just ran it's course

I suppose the person you answered to was trying to say that, yes, it was cancelled but the show had reached its limits anyway, and that making a 6th season wouldn't have been interesting.
I suppose I feel the safe, I love the characters and all, but the 5th season is already feeling really worst than the previous (as was the 4th imo)
Canada's weird government blah
shareWithout our weird government you would probably have gotten less than 5 seasons. Unfortunately, Sci fi is underrated, and doesn't get as much ratings as all those soaps with the same storylines over and over again
shareNot as weird as the US entertainment industry that is so lazy it wallows in reality show slop instead of actually working to foster creativity.
Is that what you meant?
As someone else commented, it has a lot to do with the financial support from Canadian government. Lost Girl was created and produced with the support of the Canadian Television Fund (name changed to Canada Media Fund). The funding is available for 5 years. After that, all production costs are budgeted with private funding.
Rick Howland mentioned the 5-year plan in an interview about Season 5:
"The producer, Jay Firestone, when he created the show, he kind of said This is going to go for five years. He had a plan."

Lost Girl might have been able to get a sixth year from Showcase, its home channel, if Season 4 hadn't been a disaster that resulted in a huge loss of viewers. Judging by the types of comments left on the show's Facebook page, it was a WTF? season for even the general audience. Showcase has rarely announced total viewership for Lost Girl, but it must have looked at the overall results for Season 4 and decided not to bleed money. Producers can't pitch for funding from the home channel after such a slip, trip and fall.

I think you two nailed it on the head pretty much exactly. I agree with just about everything both of you wrote.
shareLet's face it. The show is not the same without Kensia
shareYou're entitled to your opinions about your favorite character and actress.
But Kenzi/Ksenia was in all of Season 4 and it didn't save its ratings from sinking like the Titanic.
Kenzi was great in Season 1 and 2. Ksenia is probably a trooper, but she got out of her commitment to Lost Girl before the announcement in August 2014 that Season 5 was going to be the final season.
"The producers were very supportive of me and my decision, and to have me back in whatever way we could. They kept open minds and collaborated with me to help Kenzi return again….I feel like the end of Kenzi as we knew her was the Season 4 finale. I really wouldn't have imagined it any other way, so again I thank the writers." - Ksenia Solo

Kenzi was my favorite and now I don't care if it's cancelled.
shareAs for it being "cancelled" - - five seasons is a good run for a Canadian TV series. Most series made for Canadian television channels are lucky to get three seasons. All things considered, Lost Girl hit the Canadian TV jackpot.
Ksenia Solo is the one that wanted to leave Lost Girl. If you are familiar with her besides watching her in Lost Girl then you would know that she wanted to leave the series to work on other acting opportunities, and to produce and direct. She has her own production company. She appears in season 5 because Lost Girl producers were willing to work with her around that.
The best character in Lost Girl is Bo. The best performer in Lost Girl is Anna Silk.
Without Anna Silk and her interpretation of Bo there would be no Lost Girl.
Yeah exactly 5yrs is good for a Canadian show. TBH, I actually prefer it this way because then you're not trying to track a show and watch every episode over like 8+ years and later you just get bored of it anyway and then you lose interest and yeah.
Canadian shows also typically have like 13-16 episodes in a season compared to the standard US 22-23 episode seasons.
Typically I can't really keep up with a show for more than 3-4 years (which is also often a Canadian series' run time). This is why I liked Being Erica--4 seasons and done. Yeah sure it would have been nice if it kept going but honestly it has to end sometime, and I'd rather it go out on a high note than just start dragging on and getting boring.
In fact, I missed most of the 4th and all of the first half of the 5th season of Lost Girl now just to losing interest for a bit. I'm now trying to catch up with all the episodes I missed 'cause I know it'll come to a close after "part 2" of Season 5.
On an similar note I stopped watching the show How I Met Your Mother after the 3rd or 4th season. The show kept going for 9 and despite the fact that "you need to find out how it ends" that still didn't keep me watching. I just got fed up with it and didn't even watch the last episodes.
So yeah 5 years? More than enough for a TV show IMO.

I don't find Bo particularly compelling, but I still enjoyed the show in part due to its incredible supporting cast. Kenzi was by far the biggest piece of that. It'd be like cutting Willow and Xander out of Buffy (although I do find Buffy as a character slightly more compelling than Bo).
shareI have been binge watching the series as most of the cast (Bo, Kensi, Dyson,Lauren, Tamsin and Vex) will be at DragonCon (Labor Day in Atlanta) this year. I am at the start of the third season and am OK with the show. I do like the humor and the Fea of the week.
What should I expect for the next 2 seasons (Season 5 is not yet on Netflix)?

Thanks for the synopsis.
I am enjoying Season 3 so far (just finished ep 7).
It seems many shows are going with the overall arc approach and not everyone will be as good as others. This happens with non arc shows as well but the thing is that if an episode is bad with a non arc show you just go to the next ep. If an arc is bad, sometimes it takes down a whole season.
I liked Season 4...well, the first half...anything that didn't have to do with that *beep* Rainer plot twist? My review of "Origin" says everything.
shareI can't believe it, but at least the series will have an ending and not just cancelled. I wanted to be Bo...before being a Mom...I think I was for awhile...
shareI finally managed to get Season 4, not an easy taske when you watch in french lol. And honestly it was the worst beginning of season i ever saw. I was literally starting to think i actually didn't watch season 3 last episode or something...
First episode was weird, second help a bit but is still so out of context. I hope the season goes a bit better cause 2 episodes waste on a 13 episodes season...
So well lets just say the show really lost appeal for me, season 1 was great, season 2 was ok with some very good part, season 3 was meh and 4 ill wait til i watched it entirelly but it seem ass so far. Sometimes its better for a show to have a conclusion than to become ass.....
Alice is the worst character of all time, she need to die in the last movie. Chris/Jill are RE !!!

Well i finished season 4 and i made a huge rant on it in my own thread...
I just read the rest of the post and glad to see im not the only one hating the Rainer twist and how the show feel disjoincted.
Not surprised the rating sinked during season 4... its really a BAD BAD season. The only thing that was decent was Kenzie's final moments... altough i feel killing off 2 main characters is way too much for a 13 episode season.
Also i feel season 5 will surely not be the same without Kenzie... it will be weird.

Glad to hear this

In my opinion, the show has definitely run its course by this point, and it's good that they're ending it. The last couple of seasons haven't been very enjoyable; they're definitely running out of ideas. And it's not the same without Kenzi.
shareI'm fed up with Lauren. Bo should be with Dyson!
shareWho cares what you're fed up with? The series is over. The people who created the series decided that Bo chose Lauren, and Bo & Lauren were the romantic couple that would survive -- from the first episode when they first met, until the final episode.
That's it. End of story.
Move on. Get a life. Find another TV show and a character in it to bitch and moan about.
