I know that's a favorite episode for a lot of people, but I hated it. For pretty much the reason you stated. But not only that, but that Bo spent the entire episode whining about her parents not being "understanding" when the thing they weren't being understanding about was the fact she killed a kid. They were trying too hard to create an allegory between Bo's situation and the horrible cases of kids being kicked out of their homes by bigoted parents for coming out to them, but Bo KILLED someone. That, to me, was the wrong direction to go for a reunion episode. And then on top of it all they add a coincident killer fae for Bo to have to confront that had nothing to do with anything.
I think it should have turned out that her parents knew all along she wasn't human and Luann had warned them that if Bo did anything "special" that it would attract the attention and bad people would come for her, so they kicked her out because they knew she'd be in danger if she stayed. And they should have made that Polly-whatshername-fae the reason Bo's mother was nuts (and was what killed her father, who Bo didn't even mention even after finding out he died while she was gone. WTF, Bo?) and that the Polly fae had been left by someone in case that Bo came back. So Bo saves her mom, finds out that her parents actually always loved her and endured torture at the hands of the fae rather then tell them where she was or try to bring her home, so that Bo realizes that she's not the monster because of all the people that she killed on the run, but the fae are for all their games that made it necessary for her to have to have grown up outside of them and not had the chance to learn how to control her powers as a kid. Plus, it would have reinforced Bo's choice in Season 1 of choosing humans as her clan as the right choice.
