You could always watch y'know, actual porn. And Boogie Nights had Julianne Moore and Heather Graham naked in it, that's not bad.

reply

That's not the point though, is it? A movie about a drug lord will often feature depictions of drug use and dealing, so for movies about porn to not show nudity seems unusual.

reply

And yet, I just mentioned a film about porn that has nudity in it

reply

Movies about porn are usually anti-porn, so the filmmakers do their best not to titillate by having their attractive stars doing explicit scenes. It's wrong, didn't you know, to find females attractive these days? So very wrong, and hateful, and bigoted, and etc.!

Is this true?

Of the American films I've seen about porn in recent years (Finding Bliss, About Cherry) this is the first that was anti-porn. I honestly can't think of many movies on the subject that were anti-porn. Hardcore comes to mind, but that was thirty years ago.

reply

From what I've seen. They're not explicitly anti-porn, in that they don't come right out and say "this is wrong", but the characters are always portrayed as drug addicts or mentally damaged in some way.

I don't agree that there's anything inherently anti-porn about that kind of a portrayal.

There really is a lot of drug use (specifically cocaine) among female adult entertainers. You can still read on the AVN website about how, in 2005, Gia Paloma ODed on a Friday and went to the AVN Awards (where she won) on a Saturday.

Furthermore, some adult entertainers actually are emotionally damaged. Belladonna, one of the most famous women in the industry in recent memory, was very open about her struggle with serious depression.

Girlvert, the memoir of Oriana Small (Ashley Blue), is honest about the preponderance of drug use in the industry and the author herself clearly has some psychological issues. Yet, Small is also very positive about her experience in the adult film industry, demonstrating that it is possible to acknowledge the negative aspects of the pornstar lifestyle while not concluding that porn is somehow "bad" in and of itself.

Boogie Nights is an excellent example of a film that shows drug addicts and mentally damaged people working in the industry but is not anti-porn. There's also About Cherry, the protagonist of which is emotionally damaged yet it is through her work in porn that she finds self-fulfillment.

There doesn't seem to be much nudity in movies today period, not just movies about the porn industry. Still tons of violence, of course, but it seems nudity is more scarce. Just an anecdotal observation, I have no statistics.

reply

It's been the long-standing position of the MPAA to weigh sex as more offensive than violence, which is why you're Faroe likely to see the end of a person's life (PG onward) but not the potential creation of one.

Paul Thomas Anderson said he had a choice between making a long R-rated movie or a shorter NC-17 one. Story was more important to him so he shot for the R rating. That said, I wouldn't agree that Boogie Nights has "the least amount of nudity." Compared to what? Same goes for Lovelace. If you compare Lovelace to other films about domestic abuse, I think you'll fine that it has more nudity, not less.

I can't recall if there was any nudity in Wonderland, but either way it was a good movie.

reply

Thats because movies about porn (or in this case porn stars) are not trying to be.... pornos.

Ashmi any question

Yup.

And who wants an NC-17 rating anyway.
