Eric Roberts

Interesting that he was cast, being that he played a Chuck Traynor type character in a movie that was 10 times better, Star 80.

I told my wife that. I'm sure Roberts was cast for that reason.
But Star 80 was vastly superior, and a MUCH more disturbing film.
This film was more like a PG-13 version of Boogie Nights.
Sorry, but gets a thumbs down from me.
The documentaries about Lovelace and Deep Throat are MUCH more intriguing.
They really soft-soaped the whole Mob ties, and the real danger that movie houses faced when showing the film. As in knee-capping if they didn't cough up the receipts.
I was also surprised they didn't show Harry Reems claiming his "first amendment rights" as an "artist".
Boy, that didn't fly in 1972.
They made Reems look like some kind of angel.
Thin gruel here. Could have been so much more.

When I was watching this, I thought about him, and then he just comes up in a scene, I could not help but laugh, because I remembered the haunting portrayal he did in Star 80, which it took him a while to shake, but it is good to see that he has a sense of ironic humor. And I thought he did a good job.

reply

I don't think he'll ever shake that role. It's the best performance of his career, and as the late Gene Siskel once said, "it's one of the best performances I've ever seen". And I must agree. Even though he plays the biggest creep in the world, I don't think he'd want to shake that performance. It's that good.

reply

You are right, he was brilliant in the part, I don't think he would want to shake it completely either, but he also wants to be considered for different roles also. But I have enjoyed most of what he has done of late, Almost Perfect, etc.

Eric Roberts' "Star 80" role is one of the great performances of the '80s. he's completely forgettable here, unfortunately, but that's true of the rest of the cast because this is so poorly written and directed.

I was kind of surprised that he was cast in such an unremarkable part in Lovelace but he made the most of it. I didn't believe James Franco as Hefner for one minute and thought it would have been much more interesting to have put Eric in that role, even though he's older than Hef was at the time. I think he could have nailed it in a very interesting way.

Star 80 is one of those movies that I just HAVE to watch whenever it's on.

I would love to have seen Eric Roberts as Hugh Hefner in this film or any other, regardless of the age factor. That's one of many roles he seems born to play. Thankfully, there's still time if that's ever a possibility.

And yes, "Star 80" is morbidly fascinating, owing mostly to Roberts' killer performance.

reply

Actually Roberts should had played Hefner.

It's that man again!!

reply

Eric Roberts would have been perfect as Hefner, as he (almost) always is.

reply

I would not have cast him as Hefner. Roberts is good at playing slimy characters but Hefner is not slimy. He's kind of an unassuming genial type of guy. Can you see Eric Roberts walking around in silk pajamas and a pipe? lol

reply

Eric Roberts was soooo good in Star 80 it was ridiculous. Sarsgaard was good in this but Roberts was so much more slimy.
