The Art of Racing in the Rain

A friend of mine recently recommended a book called, "The Art of Racing in the Rain," by Garth Stein. It's one of the best books I've ever read! (Currently #4 on the New York Times best-seller list, too.)

The narrator mentions Ayrton Senna several times. I'd never heard of Ayrton before, but, after finishing this book, looked him up.

Long story short, I very much want to see this movie! Any idea when it will be released in the US?

This film is more about the man than the racing driver, and while it does touch on his wet weather skills, it certainly does not do him justice. I'd absolutely recommend you see the film when it's released to learn more about him and the legend, however as for learning more about his wet weather driving there's no substitute to the real races themselves. Most specifically Monaco 1984, Portugal 1985, Europe 1993, and I'd also throw in Canada 1989. Ayrton excelled in any wet race and even during small showers like the ones in Japan in 1988 and Brazil in 1991, but these races were certainly the highlights of his career in the wet.

Since Senna's death, a few drivers have earned their own reputations of driving in the rain, including Schumacher, however no driver before or after his time was able to excel at such a high level in this type of weather. Senna is certainly the one to look at if you're going to pick one driver from Formula One.

Thank you. I would like to see these races. (Because of the Art of Racing in the Rain, I've begun watching Formula One races on SPEED.) Are these older races out on DVD? Or where can I find them?

I recommend you watch the tribute to Ayrton Senna made in the BBC Top Gear, shows a little more of his skill as a pilot. You can find it on youtube. I've seen their fantastic live racing, have all etched in my memory, but it is nice to have videos to commemorate this genius.
