Hey Formula one, learn something from your past.

The sport is to clinical now.
Back then you had color and personality.
i got chills seeing Ayrton in the #27 McLaren and the red five of Mansell.
the off track feuds spilling over among the drivers.

bleh...now the cars are orderly numbered by last years finishing position.
you have to have nice haircuts and say politically correct things on camera at all times.
i go to sleep during the post race interviews now.

and why was there not one snapshot of schumacher in the film?
even him, the stoic german broke down in the post race interview one time after he broke Sennas record for race wins.
whats wrong with showing real emotion like that.

and all the electronic and weird artificial devices...take em away...let the cars be technologically advanced yes, but not do the driving for them...and dont introduce aritficial rules like this year - the deployable wings, to heighten the show...look back at what made F1 so great - the battles between drivers, the personality...it is so different now

reply

Agree completely.
F1 died for me in 94.
It's so dull now, no one has 'fun'. It's just about bussines and not sport.

There are no drivers anymore, just "passengers".

Edit: Hamilton. He's about the only man on the track now that actually races and overtakes anymore.

Jesus died for our sins. As he's already dead...sin away.

In your opinion... I find the last few years very boring. Especially 2011, with Vettel 120+ points ahead of his nearest rival.

reply

I don't think the last few seasons have been too bad. The worst time was in the early 00's. Schumacher in the best car by a mile, the most reliable car by a mile, on the best tyres and with a compliant #2 driver...Now that was boring!

The problem now is that F1 is too corporate and there are literally billions of dollars at stake. Because of that the drivers are very limited in what they can say for fear of upsetting the sponsors, so you rarely get to see their true personalities. Look at what happened earlier this year to Hamilton when he made that off the cuff joke that the reason he kept getting called in by the stewards was because he was black. It got blown out of all proportion, and that's bad for business so best just to keep your mouth shut seems to be the general rule.

Feuds seem to be bad for business too, so the teams do their best to calm things. Sure, there was Hamilton vs Alonso but that's gone quiet this year. Hamilton/Massa isn't really turning into anything and Vettel/Webber have kept it quiet too, though that may have more to do with Vettels' driving this year!

That's what I really miss. I don't want to see all the drivers congratulating each other, I wanna see them at each others throats!! I miss the days like Senna punching Irvine, or Schumacher trying to attack Couthard. I miss Nelson Piquet stirring things up for everyone, and the days when Lauda really spoke his mind (hilarious). I don't want my F1 drivers all nice and clean cut, I want them to get drunk, party hard and work their way through half the female population of Britain! Publically! like Jemes hunt.

Hell, even the FIA president is boring now. In the 80's you had a french buffoon with a huge ego and a cartoon nose in the form of Jeam-Marie Balestre. In the 90's we had Max Mosely, the son of a British Facist with a penchent for Nazi dungeons and a spanking fetish. You may not have liked them but at least they were never dull! what do we have now? A short chubby french mute in the form of Jean Todt.

The racing might have improved the last few seasons since the cars are more closely matched than ever, but jeeez, I can feel my eyes getting heavier by the second when it comes to the post race interviews. Where's the arguing, the back-biting, the looks of sheer hatred? It might not have been good sportsmanship but it was alot of fun!

I'm a big Hamilton fan, not because he's British, I just like the way he drives. But I find myself hoping that he'll keep crashing for the rest of year. Why? Because eventually one driver, probably Massa or Webber, is gonna get so p****d off that they jump out of the car and punch him. Then F1 can go back to what it does best, controvesy. All the drivers can start hating other again and the tabloids can take sides and stir things up even more. Then everything will be right with the world again.

Errrrr....rant over....I think

The last two years have been awesome IMO.

I dont care that Vettel ran away with it, he was by far the best driver and no one can touch him at the minute.

I like the DRS and KERS but i think it needs to be regulated better next season.

reply

I bet you like NASCAR also....lots of artificial means to keep the "racing" close n "exciting".

And I loved when Schumacher was dominating cause it was watching true greatness on display.
Vettel for whatever reason, I get very bored by.

...and does no one care that the numbering system is done so clinically now?
So orderly?
NO ONE can choose their car numbers. Why?
It robs the sport of so much personality.
I hated the last two years. Idk maybe all this appeals to the masses more ala nascard, but it's not formula one.

reply

To be honest I haven't really missed the numbering but I think that's mainly because, for me at least, the far more annoying trend is drivers changing their helmet colours. I can't put my finger on quite why it annoys me so much but it's something I wish would just disappear from F1 for good.

reply

Everything has to be politically correct and family friendly now these days.

"I've got an astral goat named Herbie, she's faster than most but she's getting old."

reply

I didn't think anyone COULD ever choose their race number. Didn't the teams just use the same numbers year after year? (aside from teams with the current world champion who obviously would use 1 & 2).

reply

Well up until about 12 years ago you could choose your number. First come first served.
Such as Nigel mansells red 5. And Damon hills 0. And 27 should only ever be on a Ferrari.
Go back and look at history. And even in other series the drivers who know would snatch up number 27. Jacques villeneuve used it in indycars. So did Dario.
Of course the champion would always use number 1 the next season.
No it's based on where the team finished in the constructors category the précvious. Year.
How clinical and without soul or personality is that.
And artificial means to keep racing close or promote passing.
Bleh. To me formula one is more boring now than at any other point that I have followed it. And that goes back about 40 years.

I don't know about all of this, everything evolves. Senna was unique but when I look back at footage of Clark, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart etc. F1 looked familiar, similar to how it does now. Especially some of the footage of Hill at awards ceremonies or that time he was in hospital. He was fun but there was a gentlemanly aspect to the sport.

The stuff we see in clips is the best stuff but Senna raced in F1 for 10 years, look at this documentary, we saw lots of cool stuff but it didn't feel like we watched 10 years of career. It leads me to suggest that outside of highlights packages F1 has always been the same.

Maybe I'm wrong for Senna, but the rest? really?

For me F1 was worst in the early 00's. Nothing to do with Schumi, it just didn't seem interesting.

This last year has been the most fun in a while. Personalities like Button exist (I like his pit lane runs when he wins!), Webber is still strong and speaks his mind. Alonso is a bit of an enigma but then Raikkonen will be back and he really is something else. Hamilton doesn't do it for me I'm afraid but at least when he is being an idiot he is making things interesting but he'll never have the class of Senna.

Because of what the sport does to push technology you can't have people cheating so a lot of rules exist. What they are slowly doing at the top though is finding ways to take the sport to new countries, to introduce rules to keep teams on their toes etc. Qualifying needs some work like an extra set of tyres for Q3. And I really wish we could see better parade laps at end of races but appreciate this just isn't possible. One donut a year from Massa!

But hey, look at MotoGP. Even that can be a bit sterile at times. It is more open, that's the nature of motor bikes but Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa, Jorge, they're hardly sports personalities of the year. Simoncelli (RIP) was a shining light like Senna and Rossi is superb but this next year will only be interesting if the teams are close together and Rossi is winning again.

I'm rambling but I guess I really feel nothing has changed that much. It's a bit more professional and there is a lot of money involved but c'est la vie.

One other point, but based on my experience is that F1 is also generational. I've enjoyed two separate eras of F1 and disliked third in between. If we remain patient and keep our minds open I'm sure other good seasons/eras will come along.

Look at next year, is that to be six world champions on the grid? If Michael is competitive we'll see fireworks at Mercedes. If the car works well we'll see Button rival Hamilton again. Webber will hopefully have found some form. If Alonso has a working wind tunnel the Ferraris will just be crazy. Massa! Raikkonen and his ice creams mid race. If Vettel is put under more pressure how will he react? I could keep going, but we'll keep an eye on a Kubica return and the increasing pace of Force India and the Lotus Renault.

I think things are quite exciting. If we find some new personalities in the sport (maybe those who haven't rich people backing them) it will just continue to get better,

He had more class in his little finger than you have in your entire body

You need to learn some finesse and indeed develop some class frankster177.

I don't even know what you're trying to say but if you don't think he had class that is your opinion fine. Thanks for sharing.

The rest is uncalled for. I'd thank you to leave what looks like racism elsewhere.

You're a racist, and an idiot.

[deleted]

Please. You're just a childish hypocrite. You live in Australia yet appear to hate your national sides and sportsmen, you appear to be proud of being a racist moron, and to top it off, you now assume that the English hate Ferrari, which is a load of bull. Why don't you stop spamming this board with your rubbish?

I don't 'worship' Senna. I 'do' acknowledge him to be a fantastic driver who gave 110% and was completely committed. I don't reject his or anyone else's accomplishments just because of where he came from or who he drove for. You accused Mclaren of cheating. Were they cheating when Senna drove for them? You accuse Honda of cheating because they spent more money than others at one point... but you have no problem with Ferrari doing the same to dominate during Schumacher's time there.

Finally, your Bigfooty profile lists you as living in Melbourne and you use phrases like Pom. Don't be surprised if that leads people to think you're Australian.

reply

Will we ever see another personality like James hunt?
Not in this era.

But really this numbering system really grinds my gears.
I mean what's the point?
Why can't teams choose their own numbers?
Why can't teams have three cars?
Why can't we have a true Q3 with no weird tire fuel parc ferme nonsense. Let them go all out damn the rubber throw the tires away low fuel last gasp run for pole?
I guess different strokes. I see people say the last three har been awesome and the early 00s sucked. I feel exactly the opposite.
