Given that he's managed to elude the Predators for so long and even managed to kill some of them, I'd have thought he'd be a valuable trophy to have in their collection, but they pretty much vaporise him with their laser gun at the first opportunity.
shareI thought his character was a wasted opportunity. He was a badass that was dispatched way too quickly and easily.
He was written to have been there too long, and had become unhinged because of it…and that’s not the direction I would have gone with that character.
If it were up to me, I would have made him a difference-making asset to this new group of soldiers. As if to say that he FINALLY bumped into a group of survivors that he believed could help him get off the planet.
It just didn’t make writing/script sense to me that he’d want to kill this entire group off simply to take their possessions. Personally, I wouldn’t have written that character as one that was defeated, and resigned to staying on the planet.
I would have written him more in the spirit of: Thank God, there’s finally a group of people that I can work with to get off this planet. I mean, just simply having someone to talk to would have been a blessing.
Yeah I agree with all that. They should have taken his character in another direction. I mean I can sort of understand from the point of view that his primary motive is now survival over escape because the guy has spent so long on the planet already and has, as you say, become unhinged, therefore looking to prolong this by killing the others off. But I prefer the idea he'd want to help them and himself get off the planet. He's obviously smart to survive for so long and must know it's possible if Adrien Brody's character managed to figure it out in 1 day. He shouldn't have died so easily either, this was just a cheap cop out.
It's not the only problem the film has with character motives though. I thought the serial killer suddenly deciding to act on his impulses at that particular moment was dumb too. Didn't even make sense including him if we're honest.
The film had a good premise and a good cast but seemed a wasted opportunity.
Topher Grace’s serial killer character is, IMO, the first character I would have erased after a first draft of the script.
He’s only there for an underwhelming twist towards the end, and isn’t even an intriguing character throughout the movie. Personally, I don’t care for “twists” in a survivalist movie.
Instead of twists, I would have preferred more sweaty details of how elite worldwide soldiers could outsmart the Predators, and get off the planet. Simple. Not everything needs a twist. Stronger character development, teamwork, and grittier details about what these soldiers are willing to do to get off the planet.
Laurence Fishbourne’s character should have been the cog that put this team of soldiers over the edge, and into a position to succeed. Kinda like getting a star player mid-season that can help you get into the playoffs.
