I get why this show is both slammed and praised - often at the same time...

It was reported some time ago that BBT's character was written specifically for him and that is so true. Though this type of role is nothing new for BBT, he still delivers and talk about silver-tongued dialog rolling out of his mouth.

And the storytelling is compelling and enjoyable as hell.

However, the Ali Larter and daughter characters both make me cringe, especially the shallow and vapid role played by the daughter. For one, I know people like the Ali Larter character that have the same sort of mentality and psychologay that they had as 17-year-olds, even in an advanced age, but I still enjoy her acting so much and love her fire that she shoots out.

And the daughter character clearly is afflicted with the Dunning-Kruger effect and just the characters dim-bulb portrayal makes me hope for when she leaves for college - it can't be soon enough.

I genuinely like how the show gives a good portrayal of blue collar men working in the drilling industry. I like how Thorton and Hamm’s characters have a lot of lines about the practical side of the petroleum industry. But the actresses are all playing their roles like caricatures. It’s soap opera bad and I wonder if it’s imposed by MTV because they’re figuring there’s an adolescent audience who wants these immature cliches. I’m on episode 5 and pretty convinced I’m gonna bail.
