major plot hole? (spoilers)

At the end of the movie John Malkovich's character explains that if he captures someone's likeness he can possess them.

what confuses me tho is that his first request is to aquire all his "art" implying he didn't have access to them when the first few copycat crimes were committed.

is this an oversight or did I miss something?

I thought it was explained by the warden when they discuss that he had "suicide attempts" in which he slashed his wrists to draw on the walls with his blood.

however they also say he was transferred to the facility to prevent him doing that which just implies he would never have had access to what he would have needed to carry out his plans.

It's possible that The Artist had already drawn Jake before his arrest, just like he had drawn Jake's partner. Maybe the art supplies were needed so that he could draw Mary's husband, Dale, and so that he could get into Dale's head to find out more information about Mary. That's my guess.

I was just thinking about the scene where all of the detectives rummaged through The Artist's belongings, when he is away from his cell, in order to look for clues. Dutch, the young male detective, looks at a drawing and says something like, "that's a person who looks familiar." I initially thought that was the drawing of Jake, but now I think that drawing was supposed to be one of Mary's husband, Dale. Dutch would have been able to tell if the person who was drawn was Jake.

it still feels heavily implied that he not only needs to have drawn the person but needs contact with whatever object it is while this transference is taking place.

why else does it show his seizure-esque state while holding the paper?

when i say its implied, there are hints to how the paintings/sculptures are basically effigys, after all why have the voodoo doll scene otherwise?

it just feels like a pretty big oversight to me.

In the beginning scene of the movie, The Artist is seen sketching someone while using a small candle to see before putting out the candle when a guard comes by. I think that he was able to convince one of the guards to give him a pencil and some sketch paper to draw with some time during the five years that he had been incarcerated.

it actually loooks like it is him drawing the portrait that shown later (Jakes).

i must have missed that scene somehow on my first viewing.

Yeah, he could have been drawing Jake in the beginning.
