I completely agree with everyone on here saying Joanna/JJ should have just been an out & out bad girl.
I disagree. To me, the point of the movie was that Marni was living in the past when it came to her perception of Joanna. All she could see was JJ the bully, not the good person she became. Joanna only started reverting back to the Queen Bitch of the Universe persona AFTER Marni started being snarky to her and acting like a butthurt child instead of a grown adult. Joanna wanted to move on past her high school persona, but Marni wouldn't let her. In essence, Marni and Joanna switched their roles from high school, with Marni being the bully now and Joanna being the victim. The difference is that the older Joanna has the stones to stand up for herself, unlike the younger Marni.
There should have been another girl, someone deserving of Will's love that would have been overlooked until Will was upset with Joanna.
And that would simply repeat the same tired theme from so many movies, making the movie less enjoyable.
Odette Yustman is a horrible actress. She has to cry a lot & she is not believable at all as a sympthetic character. She IS believable as a complete bully & bitch.
While I agree with you about the believability as a bully and bitch, I think her performance as a high school student was extremely hammy and over the top. Then again, she was the queen bee of the school, and it's believable that she would ham it up for the camera.
Odette Annable is indeed not the greatest actress, but then again she hasn't had a large number of roles, and none where she truly stood out. What she needs is a role that speaks to her, one she can play brilliantly.
If they wanted us to believe JJ had changed, they should have taken out the 'Moo' necklace part & the conversation in the bathroom. They should have set it up to make it look like those actions were completely innocent & she didn't realize what she was doing.
No, I think it was perfect. As I stated before, Marni had become the bully and Joanna the victim, but Joanna was both striking back in small ways (with the MOO necklace) and basically telling Marni to F-off (the bathroom conversation). These are all hallmarks of a victim standing up for themselves, whereas Marni's actions were definitely the mark of a bully, a fact alluded to by Joanna when she compliments her for using the time capsule video, calling it "genius."
Kristen Bell is a very pretty woman. Maybe not as pretty as Odette Yustman, but definitely pretty. Her looks are really downplayed in this movie. Even when she is supposed to look good she looks blah...they could have done her up better.
I think it was well done. She was still very attractive, but believably attractive as a girl who was once the ugly duckling and fought her way out of it. Beautiful. Not glamorous, not modelesque, but simply beautiful.
