Ok Well here goes: Riding shotgun means riding in the front paasenger seat of a car , the origin of it started in the days of the Old West and when there were stagecoaches ,on a horse-driven stagecoach , there was the guy who control the reigns of the horses , and the guy next to him held the SHOTGUN in cases there was a robbery on horseback , by the the likes of Jesse James or other outlaws etc.... which was a common occcurence back then I hope this helped
