Marni did nothing wrong
I don't understand why her mother and brother were mad at her.

I'm with you, she did him a favor.

And yet....he still married her! I don't understand that, at all.
shareShe really didn't. Her brother needed to know the truth about who he was marrying, and it was worth the cost.
From someone who knows what it's like to marry a person who withheld the truth about the past and the kind of person she was, (and knowing the detrimental affect it can have later on), I was highly rooting for her character the entire time.
Joanna suffered humiliation for ONE night. Marnie suffered for four years plus of hell. And yet it's Marnie who's criticized by her family. Even after Joanna dumps the guacamole on Marnie, Will says Marnie is as much to blame. Even if Marnie is able to change her life, she can never *completely* exorcise the pain.
An issue never addressed in the film, or even on the discussion boards here, are we supposed to believe that Will or Charlie never tormented/bullied the boy nerds?
But throughout it all, my motto was "Dignity! Always dignity!".
Yeah...I'm confused by that whole thing. They really acted like Marni was horrible for what she did but Joanna treated Marni MUCH worse and nobody *really* chastised her for that.
shareI think their ONLY issue was that she did it in such a public way. It's really something that should have been handled within the family; not in front of extended family and friends there to congratulate him. It's adds a level of humiliation to what's already going to be a painful revelation.
shareExactly. The problem was that Marni chose to be passive aggressive the entire movie, only to choose to bring her claws out at the rehearsal dinner. By doing so, she made a public display out of it and humiliated her brother/family just as much as Joanna. Joanna may have deserved that, but her family didn't.
shareThis rosek102. I think Will was upset at her mainly for sneaking up on him and the family in that manner.
Her family, brother and Will's friends didn't deserve this elaborated fiasco. Now Will is made to be the biggest loser ever in front of all. Then again, it's a movie and so unrealistic. In real life, Marni would have told her straight out from the beginning as soon as she greeted her in the kitchen. It doesn't make sense that her own family would not believe her. Who wouldn't believe their own daughter or sister?
I'm watching it on tv now, and I think everyone is mad at Marni because she's considered an adult when she torments Joann. She's supposed to be above it. While, Joann was a child when the main tormenting happened -- she never gave it up, though.
I still don't think she was in the wrong.

Marni wasn't wrong for wanting an apology from Joanna, but the way she tried to get that apology by sabotaging her brother's engagement was wrong. Showing the school time capsule video at their engagement party didn't just humiliate Joanna, it humiliated her brother too.
I know I'm a vampire, Snookie.
I agree! Aren't families supposed to be more supportive? I would hope that my family would have my back in a situation like this. They're getting upset about Marnie "ruining the wedding" but dismiss the fact that JJ lied not only about being a bully but also for being engaged in the past.
