I never saw that as "animal testing." I thought he was building up the dog's immunity to the poison, just like he was doing to himself.
shareThat happened on the side, of course: the animal developing resistance. But really, the main point of that action of Riddick was to test the poison's lethality with an animal before trying it out on himself. 100% animal testing.
However, when considering a person stranded on a desolate place and trying to survive against all odds, I would think that some of the 2000s western welfware society's values get thrown to the garbage bin. I would say that what he did, was very intelligent and reasonable thing to do in his place. I would approve a human doing the same thing in the same situation (however unlikely) in some weird far out place.
