IMO, J.J. Abrams Star Treks lacks vision.

Let me try to explain what I mean. In the original series we were introduced to future technologies such as communicators, transporters, warp drive, phasers, deflectors, shields, etc. In J.J. Abrams Star Trek they haven't even attempted to dream up new technologies. I was really disappointed in the scene where the Enterprise regains warp power and they show jets pushing the star ship back out into space. No vision. No imagination. They should have used anti-gravity impulse drive engines and explained it's use in the dialogue. And how about space suits. I envision a suit similar to the one that was used in "The Guardians of the Galaxy", where the mask instantly covers your face, arms, hands, legs and feet when exposed to space. And provides life support for a period of time. I also envision remote controlled robots, in human form called avatars, who do the dangerous repair work outside of the star ships. I see nothing in J.J. Abrams Star Trek that inspire imagination the way Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek did.

Since the Abrams movies take place before Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, new technologies that do not appear in previous Star Strek movies or shows would not have been invented.

But he did have a vision. A vision of a lens flare and shaky cam fest called "Star Trek".
