The Heretics were potential for a spin-off!!

Who else thinks they wasted a great bunch of characters?

Once I read an interview with Julie and she said that another spin-off of TVD could be done, and when I watched The Heretics I was so excited to see their story and thought it could be a great new TV show with them, like The Originals, and by episode 16 only Valerie was alive, like, seriously!? They were the best of season 7,Rayna arc was *beep*.

Well, I won't go that far.

There was potential but within the first few episodes, it was clear they'd never be fleshed-out characters but just plot points to satellite around the Salvatore brothers. Malcolm was squandered for shock value. Oscar was an intriguing character but he barely lasted more than an episode. The only things I ever learnt about Beau were so disgusting I wish they had never created the character in the first place. Mary Louise, Nora & Valerie had the most potential but as I said, they were plot points and foils to the Salvatores so they were never consistent characters. Valerie was basically Katherine-lite & her story - which involved retconning Stefan's - made no sense for him or her. Nora went from a psychopath who murdered children and ate people on her engagement party to Bonnie's sorta-kinda-girlfriend with no basis or explanation. Mary Louise was about the most consistently written person in the story but she was a bitch we were not supposed to like.

I've said this before but I'll say it again - killing Kai and the Gemini coven made the heretics essentially redundant. Their entire reason for staying in Mystic Falls, instead of making the most of their freedom and roaming the world, living as the top of the food chain - was never explained. They were just... ridiculous, really. In the hands of better, more daring storytellers they could have been phenomenal. But that was never this show.

Yes, it's just another example of an intriguing idea that was executed poorly. I was never interested in the male heretics whose potrayals ranged from forgettable to offensive. I found Valerie dull and grating, but Nora and ML weren't bad. I really would have loved to see those 2 go full on evil bad girl, but instead they just basically hung around in Mystic Falls until they died for no reason.

I would have rather the Gemini storyline continue into season 7 (and the heretics could be a part of that).

Eh, Nora, Mary Louise, and Julian (does he count?) were the best things to come out of the group, Oscar had comic relief potential, Malcolm felt like Finn when we first saw him, that's not good. Beau handling sucked, so he sucked. I liked Stefan and Valerie. However, Valerie wasn't that good either.

The last thought of potential I thought the show could use as complete Spin off was Silas/Tessa and using the Bennett ancestry, delving into the legit depths of magic, and The Origins of the Supernatural TVD-verse.

Although Kai was an option, Chris Wood was capable of solely leading a Spin Off and his redemption arc was in motion. I wouldn't have included Jo, Liv, and The Gemini Coven from S6, I liked them but it would feel close to a retread of The Originals/Klaus, I would've just based the premise on Kai wanting to be the most powerful Supernatural being of all-time.

I didn't like the heretic. The only heretic I liked was killed off. I like Oscar, and Julian a whole lot. I started liking Valerie towards the end of the season.

I think a spend off would have had potential if they add more good looking guys. I know Julie Pled was trying to do the whole witch thing, but that wasn't going to work when she made the witches evil, petty and unlikable. Plus the whole witch obsession died down with Charmed and secret circle.

Any well-written story would be compelling if done right. The problem is that the heretics weren't done right.

The Geminis were another wasted spin-off potential. And another with Steven as the vampire hunting star. He wanted to leave TVD to play a superhero. They could have written him that roll, with a largely fresh cast, a new environment... He burnt out on TVD because they didn't do f@ckall with Jer after 4. Because the Caroline Dries years were incapable of writing for the ensemble. I know Julie is still mulling over spin-off ideas, let's see if she's ultianrely reeling from the loss of TVD, or just really ready to move on.

I believe where things are with TO by the summer will be the biggest factor. I know she's not gonna miss the fandom. Not the standom anyway. THAT's for sure!

The Hunters as a spin-off would have been amazing.

Now, this might not be a very popular opinion but I never saw the appeal of The Originals as a standalone series. They were the antagonists of the show and unless you have the chops to do a supernatural version of the Sopranos, you're going to run into a problem when you're writing a Good vs Evil story and your stars have traditionally been on the side of Evil.

Which is exactly what happened.

Hayley left TVD after she arranged to have 12 hybrids murdered --- but you'd never know that ruthlessly, coldblooded woman is the same bleeding heart, "believe in yourself and you can do anything", "i will die for my people" person in the French Quarter. Klaus is supposed to be the most feared and powerful creature in the entire supernatural verse... who unwinds by visiting the human psychiatrist, cannot best Davina the Teenage Witch, and is constantly on the verge of tears every other episode.

Then, of course, there's the painful fact that they made a series called "The Originals" and killed off half the Original family before it had even launched. Kol, Finn, Rebekah have managed to be 'blink and you miss it' guest stars on their own show!

If she had played her cards right, she'd be juggling shows like Shonda Rhimes about now, making CW a double feature of Comic book heroes and Supernatural heroes. I'm sure the only reason why SUPERNATURAL and TVD have never crossed over is entirely because of her because if 12 seasons and counting have shown, the showrunners of SPN are always game to try something new and fun for their audience. Such a shame. ... Though, not really. I have no love for the woman and I'm more than happy that she squandered her own opportunities.
