Question to Julie: Did Damon rape Caroline?

Apparently, this was a conversation that took place in April 2015 on twitter. It's buried underneath the piles of branching threads in the 'Damon is horrible' topic so I wanted to bring it out here so that everyone can have a look and give their opinion on exactly what julie says when she's asked about this question.

julieplec: @SEisForever he was an amoral character who used and abused a young ingenue. She was naive and easily manipulated and drawn to a bad boy.

LabQueen: @julieplec @SEisForever I feel Damon did not just compell her for blood - but also to have sex with him when she was scared of him...

Plec: @Lab_Queen @SEisForever no she has sex with him because she wanted to. Once she realized he was a vampire, things changed.

LabQueen: @Cetacea3 @SEisForever if damon slept with her after he compelled her it was rape - that was not schown - but implied...i think he did...

LabQueen: @Cetacea3 @SEisForever so unless Julie says he didn't i think it's up to the viewers to Interpret what they saw and many agree it was rape

blueafternoon1: @julieplec @lab_queen @seisforever So they didn't have sex after she found out he was a vampire?

LabQueen: @julieplec @SEisForever Okay - always thought that after that he threw her back on the bed...and slept with her again - against her will...

@julieplec @SEisForever 1x04 he tells her he is probably going to kill her - after he compelled her and they kissed.. [video clip of this scene inserted]

@julieplec @SEisForever :( I'd really like another answer to this one - have i been watching all wrong?

The bolded is the last thing Julie says despite repeated tweets from the same users to clarify exactly if Damon raped Caroline. She says Caroline was drawn to a bad boy. That she had sex with him because she wanted to. ---- Before she realizes he was a vampire. Once she did... things changed.

๐Ÿ˜’

How, Julie? How did things change? Sudden, strange silence... I wonder why. ๐Ÿ˜’

reply

It seems Julie backed herself into a corner and couldn't further elaborate. Had she not tweeted the "things changed" statement, this topic could've been somewhat dropped, but she shot herself in the foot.

I guess she can't come out and say that the character these writers and fans adore so much, actually raped another character these writers and fans adore so much.

My ass may be dumb, but I ain't no dumbass...

reply

I don't think she backed herself into a corner as much as it's obvious she got to a "that's all I'm going to say about that" point. I mean, this is a woman who goes epic on twitter. She's never been afraid of basically calling people "Rabid fans" or "correcting with love" fans who don't agree with her.

In fairness to Plec, she wasn't in mainly in charge of writing/story at that point in time and I'm sure in retrospect she'd have done things differently. Of course, you can also argue that if Plec had never taken over the show, Damon won't have been made into a romantic hero so his vile behaviour won't be so controversial now.

reply

I still can't believe she called fans "rabid", this was the best word she could use to describe them?

My ass may be dumb, but I ain't no dumbass...

reply

They were Bonnie / Bamon fans and she's never cared for them. She's the same person who told Bonnie fans that shipping her with Kol instead of a good sweet boy like Jamie was ridiculous etc. Sadly the BD fans let themselves forget that history.

reply

Honestly, even if he and Caroline supposedly didn't have sex after she found out he was a vampire (I personally think they meant to depict that they did), he still definitely had sex with a compelled Andie (unless we think they just took bubble baths together). I am willing to accept some ambiguity in the first situation, but there really is none in the second.

reply

(I personally think they meant to depict that they did)

Not only were they mean to depict they did but Ian has made it clear that he played Damon's interactions with Caroline with the mindset that they were having sex. So whatever the writers retroactively say, they were presented to be having sex.

reply

She didn't want to answer.

reply

Julie Plec definitely backed herself into a corner. I don't think she and the rest of the writers ever intended for Damon to look like a rapist. They wrote the scenes the way that they did because they thought it would be sexy. But I think they failed to recognize how sleazy it looks to have Damon running around half naked with young girls who really don't have any power in the situation. But they're blind if they honestly expect me to believe that a character like Damon wouldn't continue having sex with these women after compelling them (even though the sexual implication is there) or that he'd even have a problem with it.

reply

This has been an underlying problem with the show from day one, but it's been magnified as time goes on: the writers do not think things through. That, or they don't care about the consequences. Everything they do is in service of the immediate story, not the arc or the characters' progression, they're just trying to get through the story. I watched All My Children a lot as a kid and the writing on TVD reminds me of a soap opera. If they back themselves into a corner, they just say to hell with the mythology and make up a loophole. And when they can't do that, they have her attempt to explain it, poorly.

Plec is a *beep* storyteller, and worse, she is a *beep* feminist. I find it ironic that she is all over Trump on twitter, yet depicts the very thing people are mad at him about on her show, not once, but twice! Not to start another political rant again, but I really just cannot stand that woman and her hypocrisy and incompetence.

reply

That's why I can't treat the things she says like it's gospel like so many fans do. If you can't stick to your own mythology, you can't be surprised when people have a hard time just going a long with whatever you say.

reply

Precisely. There's no point me holding on to their words as gospel truth when they constantly contradict their own mythology (e.g. sire bond and humanity off switch).

reply

Ugh! I can't even talk about the Sire Bond storyline without getting a headache. ๎‚™

reply

Bruh, of course the show won't mention it, Damon's their hero. It's by definition rape. I don't get where it escapes you.

reply

Dude that is how it happened. So sick of people demonizing Damon before the fact.

reply

That is how 'what' happened? Did you miss the part where she never answers the question directly, but only clearly says that after Caroline realized he was a vampire, things changed? Nobody needs to demonize Damon. The storyline does so for him.
