Your official thoughts for 'An Eternity Of Misery'

8x04 SPOILERS

Another intense episode. I won't go as far to say good as last week, but definitely very good. Have to say I like S8 better than the last 3 seasons so far.

So, Alaric and Stefan teaming up was fun but they didn't really get a dynamic, they just went straight to questioning Sybil after Georgie awkwardly ambushed them.

I liked the Stefan/Sybil story parallels. "Which are you" was a good theme, and it's been a question in the story forever.

Damon and Lou was psychotically funny.

Way too easy to tell Peter was Matts dad. Although, Matt was finally NOT boring, refreshing to see him back.

I don't know what held Matt back from not killing Damon in that moment, he said him and Elena are through and said he killed Tyler, that right there is the green light.

Caroline, Bonnie, and Enzo not being around this week actually didn't hurt the episode as much as I thought it might.

Throwing us off with Georgie being controlled by Seline was a nice move, although my first guess was Seline.

Thank god were not getting an Alaric triangle.

An Eternity of Misery was literally a perfect title.

So, Cade is the Devil. A psychic so powerful he created his own world, Hell. I don't know specifically what this means, as in is he called the Devil because he was burned alive? Whats HIS endgame? Will Stefan and Damon literally walk past the gates of Hell and fight The Devil? That sounds so awesome but feels like we won't get past the sirens.

Special note that Georgie was pulled away just like Katherine Pierce, yes people, Katherine Pierce, Silas, among others like I guess Vicki? Are in Hell. Julie Plec even stated she had something up her sleeve when asked about bringing old characters back, guess this is it.

Tyler Lockwood is dead, Matt finding his body was heartbreaking. Kudos to Zach Roerig for making me feel it.

So, we know The Devil, Hell is where old characters lie, Matts father is here, Tyler is dead, and next week the group decides Damon is finally past saving. This is honestly pretty good. Although no one knows about Seline. Oh, and shout out to the brutalness Alaric put himself through tonight.

8.5/10 episode for me. Next week were either sinking or Swimming with Damon, let's see what happens.

Oh man what if The Brothers team up with like Katherine, Kai, and Silas to escape/break Cades "Hell" world???

reply

Thought it was interesting that Damon is doing what Selina would want him to do, just the way he tried to do what Elena would want him to do.

We're all on our way out, act accordingly.

reply

Eh, I think it's cause he's under her control still, he's in a weird way I see that parallel though, quite funny.

The Siren story was very interesting especially how it allowed us to looked deeper into the relationship and character of the brothers. It never occurred to me that these "sisters" would actually not get along well.

Cade underwhelms me so far but the hell storyline is great. We spend all this time seeing these characters grow and change only to find out that it doesn't matter because they've already all sealed their fates. It's not "fair" at all that people can't ever makeup for their actions but that's the entire point isn't it? Hell isn't fair and all our favorite characters are pretty much doomed unless something changes.

I personally don't think any of these characters are saints or anything but to the people who do think some of them deserve a better afterlife, this is a big wakeup call for them.

reply

I agree, I really like that were not painting over anyone misdeeds, even Stefan's. We're finally at a point where all of our main characters may get this wake up call to actually BE good. They're souls are tainted, but I hope they realize that shouldn't stop them from trying.

Overall I liked the ep, found it chock full of things to mull over.👍

"Our devil is different"

Instead of a fallen angel, he's a psychic African who lived on a Greek island, was burnt at the stake but escaped death by creating a psychic "world", then he contacted two psychic girls, whom inexplicably believed in one god in BC times and they weren't Jewish. Anyway, he grants them immortality/ageless beauty if they kill and eat "bad" people so he can feed on their souls.

WHAT THE FUDGE? And I thought the Silas stuff was convoluted nonsense.

Matt redeemed the episode. Wish he had killed Damon, though. Seriously.

"Our devil is different"

LOL. Yes, he doesn't endorse pedophilia even if it is just a thought and not action. So technically that makes him a good guy who I will automatically side with over the disgusting villagers who killed him.

I also understand the rationality behind his assessment to punish the evil doers. I am rooting for Cade right now.

He is like the vengeful God of the old testament or even the version of the devil that exists as the advisory to the 'Demiurge' (the creator of the material world not actually God) in Gnosticism tradition. This version of the devil, 'Satan', or 'Samael' is actually not evil in the sense we traditionally frame him. He is a fallen angel but he knows that humans are ignorantly worshiping a god who happens to be ignorant of its own origins. The demiurge and the devil are against each other because the devil wishes to make humans aware of this, that's why one of his names Samael literally means "blind god".

I really thing Gnosticism and it's ideas on the devil and God is very interesting and less black and white in terms of what is good and what is evil, unlike other traditions. It reflects the gray areas of our own existence.

You're everything to me, always have been... the sound of your voice will always bring me home.

I can tell you how often my father and I discuss my deceased sibling...just about never. Some things are too painful to talk about.

Yes.

Well, Silas was the first psychic we saw, he was making people hallucinate off drops of blood. He also grew stronger over his summer of being free and by then could manipulate an entire town square. We really saw no cap on psychic powers.

reply

Hopefully we see Silas in Hell to give the group tips against Cade.

Two brothers fighting the devil. I dk seems too "other CW show" for me. I hope they don't go that route.

Im a little peeved at the absence of magic this season to be honest. So we've got Archadeus who created Hell, Quetsiya who created supernatural Purgatory. (I wouldn't be surprised if Archadeus is an ancestor of Bonnie). Weren't there Angels in the book series?

But my real gripe is with Damon. I really hope the series doesn't end with him as some type of hero. Im pretty sure he killed Tyler. Like dead dead. Add that to all the selfish *beep* hes done over the course of the series. Plus Im getting sick of his childish behavior and then Stefan taking all the blame for him every single time he does something bad. Stefan is trapped in his own hell having to babysit Damon. If Damon died Stefan would be free from him. He would be sad for a couple years but he would be able to live a life without Damon getting him into mess after mess after mess.

I think Supernatural never really delivered in terms of "fighting" Lucifer, I mean I didn't expect them to jump him, but you know at least some type of physical struggle, it just came down to Dean getting pummeled by Lucifer once.

I'm assuming The Salvatore's would literally fight Cade.

I agree with you about Damon to an extent, right now, this isn't his fault. Sybil is controlling him, and for once, he's not in this situation because of himself, he saved Bonnie by going into the Vault. This is Sybil's fault.

Since Tyler is dead, Cade will be take his soul to hell and show him that Liv and Mason are there too, locked up together in a cage, wearing nothing but torn-ragging clothes, completely broken inside and out. Cade whispers in Tyler's ear, "these 2 poor unfortunate souls are here because of you, due to not only for their mistakes but for yours too, especially your mistakes. They bargain their souls so yours won't end up here for eternity, you unforgiving fool. Now, do you see what your rejecting their love and plead for your forgiveness has drove them to do to get you to finally see that they are truly sorry for letting you down?", leaving Tyler speechless.

reply

Mason was killed by Damon

I liked this episode even if it lacked Caroline as comic relief.
Thinking about the mystery behind season 8 hell makes my head hurt but at least it's not Dante's version.
I liked the siren's backstory, even if I don't understand why fishing was out of the question.
And , Matt King of whiny pompous still sucks. So, he's still holding a grudge vs vamps but loves his father who never gave a rat's arse about him or could be bothered to pay child support .
I can't believe they tainted Katherine's memory by giving Georgie the same exit! 
In the books there is a trip to hell to save Stefan. Maybe we're getting that.

That was the first episode I liked all season. Some of those reveals were surprising.
