Primewire is the best free site out there because they not only have like every show, ever, but they've got movies and music and their own social media, user profiles, messaging, the works. You gotta get the hang of it, figure out which users download the highest quality files, but it's not hard. They also frequently have episodes of shows before they've even aired. Not sure how they stay up (legally) but that's another issue...
As for buying TVD: I'd say yes, it's worth it. Obviously, it's the highest quality, there's no hassle when you want to watch eps back to back, there's extras (yes, those are usually on YT, but still, no hassle...) and then there's Netflix "maybes." Like maybe, the CW won't renew their contract next time around. Like they very nearly didn't this year. Also, look at all the shows on there with seasons missing. Like they start at season 3, or only have 1, 4, 5 and 8. It's not commonplace, but it's not all that rare. Finally, WHO KNOWS when the free sites will get shut down over legalities.
But yeah, do what you said and wait till Black Friday post season 8. There should be some good sales for the full series box set, and surely some awesome never-before-seen extras :-)

Thanks for your responses! I ended up just waiting until they were on Netflix and am working my way through Season 7. I'm about a third/half way in and while it's a pretty weird season, I'm still enjoying it.
I did just buy the Season 7 DVD too on Black Friday - hard to pass up on it when they're only $10!
