Well we know that they can't do that much of a time jump. The Originals returns in January,and they are supposed to have at least one cross over.

The Originals isn't coming back to March

The Originals returns next week after the finale of Vampire Diaries.The only cross over could happen during the finale as Julie already said in a interview.
Alaric will do a crossover in episode 8 of The Originals
