Official Thoughts on The Next Time I Hurt Somebody, It Could Be You'

Wow, another great episode, but I suppose we'll stil have people who say this seasons trash, the plot isn't moving forward, makes no sense, everything OOC blah blah blah.

Flashback to The Ripper of Monterey, who might be the second or third most prolific killer in history.

Back to regular time Stefan is mega multitasking

Alaric shows up but not wanting to stay in obvious fear of Stefan.

Stefan and the girls get their first actual scene for two seconds. They also later call him "Uncle Stefan" and even Ric approves, I guess I'll talk that over the 0 thank yous he's gotten.

Damon and Sybil show up, Damon obviously ready to destroy Matt and Ric, they even buried him lol.

Bonnie and Enzo meanwhile plan a trip to Paris and team up find the fork when Caroline warns them not to come to Christmas Eve. I liked their planning a trip stuff but I seriously don't like how they're swallowed in eachothers screentime.

Matt and Peter show up and Damon promises everyone someone's going to Hell. Which, actually, doesn't happen.

Damon kills Stefan, Stefan meets Cade in some sort of Limbo.

Cade shows Stefan that one of his worst deeds was erased by Seline because of the overwhelming guilt he felt for his actions. That, let's say persuasion, is what Cade wants out of Stefan, along with The Ripper. This is something we already know though, we know he feels guilty.

Damon gets Peter to admit he's a deadbeat but
we already knew that.

Seline explains to Bonnie and Enzo the innocence she saw in Stefan, how he was forced to be a monster. Already knew this though.

Damon opens Caroline's gift of Elena's necklace (lol shouldn't he not remember her?) and rips Sybil's heart out.

The Devil them blames Stefan for turning Elena into a killer, even though the sire bond is actually responsible for that. He then tells (I liked this because now I actually feel like he's the Devil) Stefan that he wants him to corrupt good souls and send those to him.

Alaric somehow trusts Seline to erase the twins memories of her. Still for some reason wants to take the kids away as well which I don't actually understand.

Stefan alters his deal with Cade, he promises to become the Ripper again to deliver multiple times more souls to him in exchange for only him and Damon serving him 1 year. To which Cade agrees. I love this deal so much, finally The Salvatore Brothers humanity-less at the same time.

Steroline have a cheesy kiss under the mistletoe.

Delena also had another cheesy memory flashback btw.

Bonnie reminds us in S1 she was basically psychic, and that she may be connected to The Sirens/ The Devil. Maybe Bonnie is the key to destroying Hell and defeating Cade?

The ending scene Damon picks Stefan up, tells him The Salvatore Brothers are on the road again and need a theme song! Stefan waits until they pass Mystic Falls' borders, and shuts his humanity off (yes!) and The Evil Salvatore Brothers ride off into the night, which may be one of my favorite ending scenes of the entire series.

8.5/10 episode, I really didn't like the Seline, Matt/Peter/Alaric stuff, Bonnie and Enzo barely added anything either. I can't wait until January 13th when The Final run of episodes starts and we see just how The Vampire Diaries comes to an end.

The ending "Theme Song" was Christmas Canon Rock from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's 'The Lost Christmas Eve'. Very cool.

reply

Thanks for finding that out, definitley will always help me remember tonight moment.

reply

Trans-Siberian orchestra very 😎

We're all on our way out, act accordingly.

From the promo to the next episode, Sybil's still alive, I agree about Damons memories, this is honestly the first thing in awhile on the show I can't keep up with. Bonnie and Enzo can be happy but they've shared every scene together since episode 4, and also agreed about Bonnie and Cade being related, it'll also enforce TVDs stereotype that almost every POC on this show is related.

She did replace his memories, but the real ones are trying to push back to the surface. In that moment the necklace overflowed his consciousness and he had a brief flash of knowing it wasn't a memory with sybil.

reply

Is that how it's working? So she's not erasing them, just pushing them down?

reply

Yeah she is not erasing the memories. She cant do that when she is altering them to have her in it. So the real ones are still there but repressed. Another possibility is that she missed some memories since he clearly still remembers Elena was a person.

It wasn't explained really, it's all still a bit ambiguous.
All I have managed to understand so far is that Sybil has been able to get a foothold inside both Enzo and Damon's brain so that although they think they have free will, they really don't which in some ways is more insidious. Damon is affected more for two reasons, 1) he has no humanity.
2)She has changed his memories.

Everyone knows by now that humanity tends to fight it's way to the surface and in Damon's case Elena has always been a catalyst in Damon finding his. He is obviously confused about his feelings for Sybil but instinctively he has trusted her since she re-wired his brain but that necklace triggered something in his brain that was remembering a girl (Elena) that he does not know, but somehow he knows that she is important but can't remember why and rightly deduces that Sybil is the culprit. Now he is away from her he might be able clear the fog in his brain a bit.

SO I have been wondering about this. I don't think Damon's humanity is off. I don't think he was suddenly hit with memories of Elena and that's why he killed Sybil. I think he was ALWAYS going to kill her. He said he was going to kill 1 person that night and he didn't do so at dinner. I think he is playing everyone and his humanity is on and he is playing some long game here.

Good catch.

I think it's most definitely off but I do think he is playing some game here.

Not my favorite episode this season but still highly watchable, thanks to Candice.
Last season Damon couldn't get enough eggnog and now he doesn't like it?
Caroline was actually shocked to hear of Damon's death lol. Later I really hoped her ire about Stefan would make her knock Damon around a bit, like she did in season 2.
Genius idea of Caroline to bring Stefan/Rebekah's necklace in the game and it worked.
Matt was the epitome of obnoxiousness again.
Was this the last we saw from Alaric and the twins?
Death does really mean nothing any more.
Last scene was awesome but I'd prefer a rock song a la Supernatural.

Good catch about Damon and Eggnog, I kind of hope we see Ric again, and I was lowkey wanting to hear Wanted Dead Or Alive, but maybe that's just Stefan and Lexis thing.

I think Stefan screwed the twins as thats who Cade will go after after the one year as they were not part of his bargain.

IF Stefan "screwed" the twins he didn't do it intentionally and maybe we didn't get the "whole bargain/deal" that Stefan made w/Cade which would have mean "hands off the twins forever". I don't think Stefan would do that to Alaric/Jo/Caroline's children, yeah Stefan's humanity is turned off now but Stefan made this "bargain/deal w/Cade before he turned off his humanity"; I think the twins will be fine and w/this "small time jump" and Alaric visiting New Orleans (crossing over to The Originals) he maybe going there to find someone to help him make sure that Cade will not be able to get his twins and I think he will get some help from Hayley. The Mikaelson family is having HUGE problems of their own which I don't think Alaric is aware of when he arrives to New Orleans - here's hoping Alaric/Hayley can help each other. I mean Alaric knows a lot of history/knowledge so maybe he could help Hayley find a way to get The Mikaelson back and maybe she can help Alaric --- just a theory. I mean Alaric's twins are very powerful already showing signs at an early age of what they are capable of - they could be the key of helping The Mikaelsons return. I think that would be a great story line and Klaus would do anything to help Alaric w/his children. I still think Stefan made part of the bargain that the twins would always be off limits to Cade, but Cade is the devil (or whatever) and can't be trusted.

**** I'm so ready for the Mikaelson family to return and start kicking ass !! I'm hoping the time w/each other made them stronger and closer as a family b/c they have "bigger fish to fry" when they finally are OUT !! I HOPE Marcel DIES! I'm sick of his crap, have been for along time. I wish Cam could come back, I REALLY loved Klaus/Cam together, falling in love; the writers pissed me off when they killed her character off. As for Davina (its been so long), she did die right? GOOD RIDDANCE!! I got sick of her "oh powerful me" routine. So ready for Marcel's ass to "bite the dust" FOR GOOD NO RETURNS PLEASE! Also ready for Hayley/Elijah scenes.

Not a lot happened in this ep but I still really enjoyed it. This final season is so much better than season 7 so I'm happy.

Dark Stefan, may I have this dance?

reply

I think it's the best since 4 so far.

reply

I predict they will mystically age the twins, any tome now.

It was a pretty good episode but something just feels off. Maybe it's because this is the final season but idk...the storyline is all over the place and relationships are being destroyed like they were nothing. I still can't get over the fact that Alaric just straight up killed Damon.

Also, it's starting to really feel like the Salvatore brothers are going to die in the end. The most prominent theme in the show right now is that they both came into town and messed everything up and that wherever they go, death follows. I wouldn't be surprised if in the end, they both die and Cade or somebody just gives Mystic Falls a full reset, pre Salvatore brothers showing up.

And a big character needs to have a dramatic death already and stay dead. Not that bs where they bring back Tyler, who hasn't been around for like 2 seasons, and kill him for shock value. I couldn't have cared less.

Which would be worse - to live as a monster, or to die as a good man? 

I liked this episode, but I did feel like Elena's presence was missed.

Caroline has become my favorite character. I think she is funny, but also smart. This Steroline thing is ehhhh, but overall I like her arc..

I could do without the overused plot device that is the humanity switch flip. Damon and Stefan are now going to willingly kill a bunch of people just so they dont go to hell. I mean, I get it, I do, but like at what point are we going to keep forgiving them? They both deserve an eterinity of misery at this point.

I hate Bonenzo. I am sorry, I find their cuddle sessions gross (although Enzo did look good for the very first time to me in that scene) and this is just so unearned. He does seem to care for her so that's good.

I like Sybil and Selene. Idk why. They just annoy me less than Damon and Stefan. Cade is ok. I kinda don't get what his deal is. Cade was gonna need to be like a gangster, better than Klaus, Katherine and Kai combined. But I do not see that. They should have had the guy who played Julian be the devil.
