Is what he did to Sybil a sign or building up to the finale of him and her?

I'm not 100% what Damon knows at this point. Sybil's little head game has been poorly done imo bc it's not making sense. As for that scene, it seemed as if Damon was confused but knew that necklace and the girl in the flashback were important.

Yes, this arc has been confusing because the story has not been told well. The necklace is the first step in unscrambling everything Sybil has done to his brain. This story is more complicated than Alaric doing an "Eternal sunshine" on Elena's brain in S6.

As someone explained sorens alter the subconscious. This is technically different than altering memory. Damon trchnically hasnt forgotten That it was Elena he had interactions with, its just been pushed so far down that it isnt accesible to his mind. The necklace caused his subconscious to briefly flare up and remind him of Elena. You could tell he didnt understand the sognifigance of the memory, just that the necklace meant enough to him to kill sybil.
