After season 3, it appeared Meredith was set-up to be a friend/ally of Damon's. She even got a promo picture in season 4, along with Elijah and Rebekah even though not a regular. Then she suddenly got written out after episode 3. Was this due to the actress having issues with Paul and they got divorced.
I was just surprised she suddenly removed her from the series, even if it didn't have anything to do with being married to Paul.
It did have to do with Paul- and as someone who read the books, I was horrified. Never cast a significant other in a main role.

Meredith should have been a character from the beggining of the series and not as a doctor, but as the teenager friend she was to the girls. Caroline being made into an actual friend of Elena's is what caused Meredith to get cut out I bet.
shareShe could have been introduced in season 5 when Elena started college. Of course they could have meet a new friend in college. I always thought it would be this until she was turned into an older doctor.
But i remember they had her in the original script but cut her out because they had too many girls.
