Damon's journal

Since there has been so much speculation about Damons character, i.e., is his humanity on or off and does he still remember Elena I thought my interpretation of his journal entry to Elena might spark some discussion on his humanity or lack of.
S7 ep 4 had some pretty interesting things going on, the heaven and hell party for one, Stefan wearing a red and black plaid flannel shirt like the one Damon wore the first time we saw him in the 1994 prison world, Caroline wearing an angel costume and not being able to dance or touch Stefan, because of Valerie's spell.
But, I think the most telling part of this ep is Damon writing a journal entry to Elena, starting with "Hell has frozen over" he discusses how he waited for Katherine and had a bottle of wine which he was saving since 1950 and talks about his anticipation of how perfect the wine would be by the time he saw Katherine again, that time would make the wine (Katherine) perfect. He then says he realized that that sip of wine would never be perfect.
"And that's the story of why I drink Bourbon."
He goes on to say, I don't know who I am without you, "Selfish friend, jealous brother, horrible son?"
He ends it with "my heart is with you". As he drinks that bottle of wine his hand on Elena's coffin,Tyler shows up to take Elena's coffin away.
To me this journal entry was the first glimmer of a human Damon, honest, eloquent, and sincere to a fault. I find it surprisingly so, as Stefan has always been the soul searching, journal writing "good brother".
This is the Damon that I think is still there.

We're all on our way out, act accordingly.

Yes this was an example of Damon being honest with himself and it is one of those rare times we get to hear what is going on in his head.
When he talks about the wine, I think he is remembering the time spent waiting for Katherine. The wine was something he kept close as a symbol of hope and celebration but he soon realised that having it nearby was making time stand still, it made him obsess and think about her too much building the anticipation to something that couldn't be matched by reality, so he put it out of sight out of mind and switched to bourbon in the hopes he could get on with his life.
He has come to the same conclusion with Elena's coffin, that having her close is not helping him live his own life (thoughts put into his head my his mother), and his obsession with keeping her safe was just putting her in danger (again thoughts put into his head by his mother), so he sent the coffin away.

Of course Lily was full of crap and he should never have listened to her.
