I'm watching season 3 when Klaus decides to save Carolina from Tyler's bite on her birthday. I can't really figure out why he decided to save Caroline when he didn't really even know at the time?
Any thoughts?
IIRC Klaus compelled hybrid Tyler to bite Caroline to teach him a lesson but afterwards seeing her (Caroline) suffering and being upset with him (Klaus) he felt guilty for his antics ...
ALSO again IIRC he had started to develop a soft spot for her by then so knowing Klaus I wouldnt be surprised if he had planned ( compelling tyler to bite her and all that) all that to come out as her knight in shining armor at the end of the day..

It was part of his plan to get Stefan to cooperate and return the coffins. He got Mayor Carol Lockwood and Sheriff Forbes on his side. They told Damon to get Stefan to get along (give back coffins) or there would be consequences. Damon (and sane Stefan) didn't want the council against them. Klaus paid to replace the bridge and saved Caroline showing he could get along, making Stefan the bad guy.
