What would have happened?

Just wondering with all the sins of Damon and Stefan being revisited this season, what would have happened if they hadn't returned to Mystic Falls.
Keep in mind that Elena was already a doppelgänger who was being hunted by Mikael and Klaus, Jeremy was already born a hunter, Grayson was a prolific mad scientist, vampire torturer.
Tyler already had the werewolf gene.
Vicki was a drug addict whom Jeremy was in love with.
Bonnie was born a witch.
Like Elena said in season 1, their lives already had bad things in them.
Would their lives have been better without Stefan and Damon?

It would probably just be Matt skipping around mystic falls clueless as the day he was born wondering why all his friends are dead and having no idea the supernatural exists

reply

Maybe, because he always survives. His Mom and Dad survived too, curiously. The only one left that's not an orphan. And is not supernatural.

If Damon and Stefan hadn't returned to Mystic Falls, the most that would have happened is that Elena would be dead. Klaus was still on the hunt to break the curse that kept his werewolf side dormant and I have no doubt he would have found Elena eventually. And without the Salvatore brothers returning beforehand, Elena and Co. wouldn't have known about any of it until Klaus was upon them. So she would've been sacrificed anyway.

Bonnie would still be a witch and honestly, without the Salvatores in her life, she would not have had to sacrifice herself so many times and suffer so much. Grams definitely wouldn't have died so early and probably would have mentored Bonnie to be an awesome witch. And without Grams's death, Shane wouldn't have been able to fill her position at the University and manipulate Bonnie. Yes, he was on the hunt for a Bennet witch, but I think Grams would've dropped him where he stood.

Therefore Jeremy's hunter side may never have been activated/needed. He'd probably still be a drugged out emo.

Tyler may or may not have still triggered his werewolf gene.

Matt would still be Matt. You know...useless.

Vicki probably would've O.D'd at some point.

Caroline may still be human, but still definitely the town bike (Damon, Matt, Tyler, Klaus, Stefan, Alaric, Stefan again....I mean come on!)

Elena was doomed from the start by just being a doppelgänger. The Salvatores just brought the pain and miser to her (and everyone else) a bit earlier.

Sheila Bennett would be alive. Her death came about from opening the tomb which she won't have needed to do.

A powerful, experienced witch alive to guide her grand-daughter a young prodigy would have seriously altered the course of this show. I am talking complete AU to what we have. That's more or less why she had to die so early, anyway. The trope of Mental Occupational Hazard. See: Ben Kenobi, Dumbledore. Even Gandalf "dies", and ends up leaving Frodo to go his own way.

So hell yeah, their lives would have been way better without Stefan and Damon. (To the point where there might not have been much of a story to tell...)
