Official thoughts: We Have History Together 8x08

SPOILER ALERT

Dammmnnnn Ian Somerhalder, back at it again with the great directing, my man.

The only true humanity free-dueling Salvatore Brother moment. Anger management for vampires. See, this was quite entertaining.

Aye! That one guys back, and wants to avenge Georgie, that's actually pretty cool, don't mind him sticking around so far. Peter on the other hand,
yes his storyline is picking up a little, but he honestly just seems like a bitter deadbeat idiot.

Caroline and Matt are good friends again? Nice of the show to remember this season. There's upcoming "tension" between them, I don't want to think it's a love interest situation, but I kind of do, Stefan's much more fun without the lovey dovey stuff and if anything Caroline proved the same for her this episode.

I also thought Caroline was going back to high school to just go because she's still 17 right lol.

Sybil is back, and I now understand that she's supposed to be the female Damon.

The Salvatore brothers start a hunting type of convo and Damon shoots down all of Humanity-less Stefan's ideas(yes apparently The Ripper wasn't back yet, Stefan wanted to be discreet or something, but isn't him being the ripper PART OF CADES DEAL!?) until they see a doctor who resembles none other than Elena Gilbert.

Not that I didn't LIKE it, but since when did Stefan Investigations happen with Cord-I mean Bonnie and Wes- I mean Matt. I mean the dude went all inspector gadget on Tara and I don't remember him telling us about the time he was Batman of Mystic Falls, even though I'd watch the hell out of it.

Damon picks at his pocket for you know what.

Caroline and Sybil discuss the 100 burning witches (hey, some ties to S1) I like this for nostalgia but besides that, their scenes weren't that fun.

Stefan and Damon make a play on Tara where Stefan tries to get her to kill him and they make a million parallels to Damons legit characterization, to Elena's choice, and the humanity Stefan had to not act how he was acting. I actually really dug it.

Matt, Peter, and new guy ( I forget his name) found out a Bell from back in the founding days could potentially kill The Sirens. I like that were finally getting to ending the S sisters, they're getting tiring, and Seline hasn't even been involved that much.

Amongst compulsion, Tara "kills" Damon. Thus, she's sentenced to Hell.

Outside they reveal the play and Stefan accuses Damon of feeling. Later we get a great scene of them and Damon throws the necklace out the window and kills Tara in front of Stefan, of course it's to the song "Jungle". Once again Somerhalder, you rock.

Matt and Peter save a bunch of Sybil's students (did I explain that, nvm it doesn't matter) Seline has the bell, Sybil threatens the twins, and taunts Caroline about her future with Stefan.

Damon finds the necklace the next morning and has a metaphorical talk with the community service guy. Damons humanity will be back in two or 3 eps tops.

Alaric, Bonnie, and Enzo are missing this episode, but Michael Malarkey was here in Spirit (and song) they played his new single "Scars" to montage over the final scenes of the episode. To which we see Stefan try to take one bite, but end up slaughtering the whole hospital, thus, The Ripper has returned. Not to mention this shot is the first brutal Vampire shot we've seen in years, bravo Ian.

It's only been three weeks in the shows time? I thought we were at least getting 6 or 9 months to get closer to TO.

Overall a solid 8/10 episode for me. Peter and Sybil really take away what could've been added by Bonnie or Cade, I'd even rather watch Enzo.

8 epsidoes left were at the middle of the end.

šŸ‘ Nice job!! Agree with some but not all, good job though!!
Was really glad to see that the humour returned to the show, and found the whole Stefan/Damon interaction interesting.
As I have wondered and posted before, it centered around the mystery of Elena's parents deaths on Wickery Bridge.
Matts past seems to point to that also. Dead beat Max has more to offer and Caroline is dealing with a crisis.
Stefan is all Rippered out!!
Fun!

We're all on our way out, act accordingly.

Thanks, I agree, I like how we have a darker storyline going on without the show trying to be hopeless and depressing.

Whatever I feel about Ian- Damon's scenes were decent and I agree with everything you said, except for never having watched the Lying Game. I'm sick of Matty Blue Eyes and all of his excuses for being a deadbeat- I wish Tyler had killed him to activate his werewolf gene.

I think that was my least favorite episode so far. Matt's whining tends to do that to me every time.
I liked the brother's interaction and how the director played a lot with the emotions in Stefan's face.
While I really enjoyed the history lesson and to say bye (probably) to the MF high school, I found Sybil's reenactment just to bully Caroline overkill. She already proved that she can kill the kids.
Warning Caroline about the ripper danger for the twins and then bringing him back foreshadows the end of Steroline, again.

Always enjoy reading your recaps! :)

I hated this episode, though. There was a period of time where I would rewatch an episode after it aired because I enjoyed it so much. I tried to watch this 3x before I was able to get through it.

I don't care about Matt's dad, it is a waste. I do not care about Dr Elena look alike. And I really do not care about Sybil anymore. There is wayyyy too much Sybil. I liked her in small doses, but she is too much now.

I laughed out loud when the intern said "witchified super bell". Like...omg, this show. Always some mystical relic more powerful than the last.

This show keeps bringing in hot girls. I am not complaining about this, but it seems weird they aren't bringing in any male eye candy. Cade is good looking, but he is barely on this show. Just seems like a weird choice to me, for a show whose viewership is more female.

I think I am in the minority, but Defan is not entertaining to me at all...

Thanks, and I understand your points, especailly about having to get through it, for what we came off of and what this seasons been, it was definitely a more simplistic, slower episode. I think they just wanted us to get a feel of Stefan and Damons new mission is, unfortunately I think Damons humanity starting to flicker really hinders the whole dynamic they could've created.

I also agree about Sybil, I think she's supposed to be Damons parallel so the writers are really going to like her.

Matts dad man, we're dealing with The Devil right now and they expect me to have interest in Matts (who's been boring forever now) estranged father who would've been great coming in around S4, when you know, Matt had NO storyline!

Things are supposed to heat up in these next few episodes so have hope lol, Caroline and Bonnie are supposed to be quite the team soon.

Nice post.
Lots of points we agree on.
I liked approx half of this episode and it won't be a surprise to anyone that the scenes with Damon in them were the most interesting to me. I just can't can't care about Matt and his Dad and all this brand new information.
I think that was the problem for me...way much info dumping which took away from the emotion outside of the Defan scenes. Too many characters that I don't care about talking for far too long. It was just boring in places.
Having said that, what character development we did get I enjoyed.

The lack of Bonnie and Enzo was glaring. Both of them should be in the thick of this as should Alaric. This story is so relevant to them.

Ian Somerhalder did a good job with the script he was given. Everyone looked beautiful and the performances from the actors were above this seasons average. Lets hope all this info dumping will lead to a more exciting last few episodes to wrap up this whole shebang. 8x09 looks way more interesting so i'm looking forward to that. Miss Mystic Falls has a tradition for drama so bring it writers.

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Agreed, I hope this was just to get the info out the way, and now it's fast-paced action again. Miss Mystic Falls should make them step their game up.

I liked the ep alot. I too was hoping for caroline-matt old flame stuff. When they were on the phone, I was distracted for a second and actually thought that they were discussing matt sending Caroline a dick pic haha. I couldnt believe it and rematched. (They were actually discussing defacing the coaches playbook)

I liked the stuff with matts dad. One of the overriding themes for me is that these are rich kids, except for matt, so the history of his family is cool.

reply

I remember liking the fact that he was never having anything to do with The Founders stuff, it made him more relatable. Now, it makes it feel like he might once again be on the opposite side of the regulars again, and well they already that last season and botched it.

reply

Agreed; I have been rooting for Matt to fight the vampires out of mystic falls since the beginning.
