Elena's necklace

Sorry, I have a terrible memory and 0 desire to re-watch seasons 1/2 whatever.

But wasn't this the necklace that originally Stefan gave Elena to keep her safe (I assume, with vervain?). Then why would it now be something is special to Damon and is used on this show like a Delena memorabilia...I'm sure there was a whole host of other tokens they could have used, but why go with the one that was originally gifted by Stefan/a Stelena symbol?

Or am I just getting things mixed up and Damon gave Elena another necklace halfway through the show that I'm forgetting about.

Stefan gave the necklace (filled with vervain) to protect her from being compelled by Damon, and himself if necessary- S1
The necklace became a symbol for Elena''s relationship with Stefan, she lost it several times but Damon returned it to her even though he was in love with her.
In S3 when Damon returned the necklace to Elena as her 18 th birthday present she realized that she loved Damon as well as Stefan, because of Damon's unselfish love for her.
It's important to know that Stefan originally got the necklace when Rebekah lost it in 1922, after his affair/ Ripper binge in Chicago.
Also the necklace was made by an ancient witch for the original witch and was supposed to give the wearer the promise of true love.
Eh, hope I got it right.

Damn. I briefly remember the season 3 moment, I think we've seen a few flashbacks of it too. Thank you for the summary!

I guess I'm still bothered the show couldn't find themselves another symbol to use. Why re-use one that was originally a significant part of the Stelena story instead of finding something new that could be even more valuable to Elena and Delena as Elena matured and Delena grew? I can't tell if it's just lazy writing or an intentional slap in the face to Stelena fans.

Knowing the show, probably both.

Yes, see your point, Idk, it always bothered me too. But I remember in s3 when Damon and Elena were driving to Chicago to bring Stefan back from Klaus their conversation in the car , Damon, "It would be a shame if all you had to remember Stefan by is that crappy old necklace." Elena " It's an antique Damon, like you."
It was the beginning of the end of Stelena. And may be relevant yet.

You're welcome 😊

Even though Stefan gave Elena the necklace it's had more meaning for Delena than Stelena. Elena treasured it bc it was a gift from Stefan, rightfully so. Damon called it a symbol of their unbreakable bond but if you look at the scenes it's much more a Delena thing. They've had more scenes involving the necklace. In 1x14 Elena took off the necklace to show Damon she wasn't lying about helping him open the tomb which showed trust. He put it back on her because he wanted to trust her as well. Damon returned it to her in 2x08, 3x01 and 3x05 because he knew how much she cared about it showing how much he cared for her. In 6x02 we see Elena recalling the moment she knew she loved him revolving around the necklace. Paralleling that, we see Damon go to Stefan's room to find the necklace because he was trying to hold onto things that reminded him of her. He also brought it back from the 1994 prison world which was how Caroline was able to give it to him in 8x07 to try and snap him out of Sybil's mind erase. I saw this somewhere and thought it was pretty poignant. "The very thing that was supposed to keep Damon out of her head, let him into her heart."

Ok, so maybe I missed something but, how do you know that Damon brought it back from 1994?
Because the necklace still existed in the present. Bonnie tried to destroy it but couldn't, S 3 I think?

All this and more.

I haven't ever seen the fact that Stefan gave the necklace to Elena as a romantic thing.
He gave it to her out of necessity, to protect her from Damon's compulsion. He gave it to her at a time when he was deceiving her about who and what he and Damon were. He affirmed those reasons during 1x06.

It's telling to me that in 1x10 (after Elena found the picture of Katherine) that she removed the necklace signifying that she didn't trust Stefan or his motives. Elena rejected this symbol of trust and honesty and chose to take her chances without it then ran straight into trouble (Car accident) and then Damon.

Elena spent 24 hours with a vampire without her necklace signifying that the necklace was not needed as a symbol of trust with Damon and this theme was highlighted again in 1x14 when the issue of trust was paramount to the story and then further consolidated in 2x08 when Damon returned the necklace to Elena.

All the powerful moments regarding the necklace have pertained to the Damon and Elena bond of trust and connection shown through the story telling while on the other hand, the show "tells" us about the necklace and significance of the necklace in regard to Stefan and Elena, usually via Damon's words ironically.

I love the storytelling around the necklace, it's so layered and a visual representation of the DE love story. How Elena kept losing it (Stefans love) and Damon kept returning it until the point came when she no longer wanted it.
I also love the fact it's the only prop that has spanned the entire series arc and is still in play right now. It will definitely feature some more because as we know, this necklace has it's own magic.

The necklace belonged to Esther. She gave it to REbekah IIRC. ANd i believe that is what Alaric will give to Elijah in that crossover for Hope. It is a family heirloom.

Don't watch the crossover, only know what I saw on TVD

It would be a great twist if the necklace turned out to be made by Cade.
