Chili dates all the way back to the 1600's in Spain. Most historians agree that the earliest written description of chili came from J.C. Copper in 1828 in San Antonio.
I'm sure Damon visited Mystic Falls a good bit over the years but we've not seen it or been told otherwise so I'm really only going on what's been on the screen. I also don't consider Elena's "old family" to be her own parents. He meant ancestors.
