Stefan Did That on Purpose

He intentionally antagonized Caroline so she'd give her engagement ring back to him. Bet that he did that because he wanted something to "anchor" him to not lose control again and be a little closer to his humanity.

It was noted in the episode (by Stefan) that Elena's necklace was keeping Damon from completely giving over to being without his humanity. In the beginning, Stefan was trying to not lose control by "wiping the blood away" from his victims. Since when has Stefan cared about not losing control with his humanity off? He hasn't, not until he really had something to lose (Caroline).

The hospital scene was his breaking point, so he decided to push Caroline to giving over her ring so he'd have something to hold onto to keep him in check (notice how he kept it and didn't just toss it).

Thoughts?

Don't be thinking about me when I'm gone.
I wasn't thinking about you when you were here.

I was thinking something similar but the opposite. I think he was pushing her away because he doesn't want to be stopped. He wanted her to resign trying to help so that he wouldn't have anything to pull him back. I think keeping the ring is a sign of his humanity fighting against the ripper trying to rid himself of Caroline's influence, not that his plan all along was to get the ring to hold onto.

Wow nice. Yeah I found it odd how he flipped the ring and caught it and I wondered what would even make him happy about it.

I think he was pushing her away. Which in a way, shows he knows Caroline can get to him. I don't think he's playing the long con with Cade though.

I agree, Stefan has gone pure loopy juice ripper. It's interesting he didn't kill her though since she is perfect Cade fodder as was lampshaded in this episode.
I remember saying a while back that all these characters were going to have the morality mirror held up to them and Stefan articulated that very well in his speech to Caroline. Caroline was willing to stand by Stefan as long as he was killing bad people but the problem is, the definition of bad is subjective to the person meeting out the punishment.
Stefan is now killing people for speeding, lol....great scene though.
It's interesting that Caroline does not see herself as evil but is happy to associate herself and even love evil and i'm glad that Stefan highlighted that. This is not a new revelation for Carolines character since she also had some feelings for Klaus that she eventually acted on and this episode to served to remind Caroline that although she might not see herself as having the capacity to BE evil, she has the capacity to forgive, love it and even tacitly condone it if it eventually get her what she wants or it serves some she loves. Anyone remember her reaction to the slaughter of the Chris the Hybrid?

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Yes, her, Bonnie, and Elena, have all had this same "problem" with their respective Li, and it is basically Cade holding a mirror to each character.
