season 8 has been labelled possibly the best season by TV.com/tvguide

http://www.tv.com/news/the-vampire-diaries-final-season-might-be-its-best-ever-14859690000036868/

Haha whoever thinks this is an absolute buffoon

the season has been a complete mess filled with repetition, poor pacing, terrible dialogue, some of the worst episodes of the series, unceremonious character exits, Matt being the most pointless character for the 8th year in a row and now he has daddy issues (boo-hoo)

i despair with TV critics :/

reply

Seriously. It's even worse than season 7 which is saying a lot.

Two words: Prison World! I believe that was in season 4 or 5.... not sure.

By far my favorite season... Bonnie and Damon focus (my two fav characters at that time), introduction of Kai (most entertaining villain).. and most importantly the entire cast was together.

Season six.

I think it's definitley the best since 4.

Season 6 has one of the most botched endings and worst storyline relationship trope for almost an entire season (Elena's memory loss) they literally flipped a coin with Kai if he was evil or not, they ADMITTED they botched and tossed whatever revenge scheme SL they were heading for with Enzo, Matt, Sarah, and Stefan. Elena's purpose that season was to be Damons love interest while Stefan's purpose was to be Caroline's. Bonnie was missing for half a season because there were 10, TEN regulars and Plec and Co. Didn't feel the need to fit her in, plus a plethora of guest characters that went nowhere, The Gemini Coven, Jo, Liv, Luke, their father, Kai, Liam, Ivy, Sarah, Monigue, and Tripp. Tyler and Matt had no storyline for half the season. Stefan and Damons bonding, Enzo being a wildcard, Sheriff Forbes, and Kai helped save this season for me.

Season 7, while improved, suffered from what season 5 suffered from. Too many villains, pointless arcs, and ridiculous storytelling.

We spend the first half of the season fighting the heretics, re-write Stefan's first love(even though Valerie was a pleasure) have Damon and Bonnie mop about Elena, Caroline and Alaric have one of the worst SLs in TVD, the only reason it doesn't become terrible is because of Candice King.

Matt and Enzo are so pointless in this first half that they literally have an argument about who's more irrelevant.

Lily bonding with the boys was nice

Julian should've been and Stayed the villain of this season, Rayna Cruz fell much flatter IMO.

Stefan and Damon spend being hated by Caroline, Alaric, and Enzo for variously stupid reasons.

Season 8, improves. We have ONE major villain, Cade, The Devil has been name dropped since Ep 1. The Sirens got tedious but they are gone now and they were at least mysterious at first.

The action has intensely picked up this season. Stefan and Caroline aren't having dumb relationship problems. Damon hasn't been terrible, Stefan being The Ripper again (truly) has been fun. Bonnie has been underutilized a little but she's finally not suffering. The plot isn't all over the place, we've been consistently focused on Hell and The Devil. Matt has a storyline, Caroline and Alaric do have storylines, Enzo and Bonnie have one coming, and Stefan and Damon are front-center, (unlike half of last season)

Also, everything that said was true.

Sorry but i'd take every previous season over this dreadful final season any day

seasons 4-7 weren't good in the slightest (i ironically though season 6 was the best season since season 4)

but season 8 is actually making me want to stop watching it - even with 6(?) epsiodes left - i just don't care about anything the show is spouting right now

And i will also take the 'botched' ending to Elena's journey and sexy Kai over Damon and Stefan turning their Humanity off for the billionth time any day
Why they had to be evil AGAIN for the final season is beyond me

Angel in Buffy/Angel had a total of TWO times he legitimately turned into Angelus - i would love to see how many times in total Stefan and Damon have done it in the 8 years TVD has been on air and i will be very surprised if it is below 5

I am just so F'n sick of the repetition on this show - the writers ran out of ideas by the fourth season and yet it still got 4 more seasons of trash after that - and this final season makes it more evident than every before

I just can't wait for it to be over and done with

reply

Stefan's turned his humanity off a a total of 3 times. Once in Season 3, once in Season 6, which was only for two episodes, and now.

Damon has turned his humanity off once, if we're counting him coming into Mystic Falls in S1 than twice.

Nowhere near a billion.

In fact, Angel became Angelus twice, which is the same amount as Damons "Evil" turns.

Now I think Angel is the greatest show of all time. So I won't argue with you upon that show, genuinely excellent in almost every way.

Buffy, however, is not beating TVD by many miles, if at all.

1. It has Xander, which is almost as bad as Matt.

2. Buffy's first season has only 3 decent episodes out of 12.

3. Its fourth season is almost as bad, if not worse than TVDs worse season.

4. It's inconsistency in the Vampire Soul lore almost completely diminishes the Great and drastic change Spike goes through.

5. I'll take Alaric and Enzo as side characters over Tara and Dawn anyday. Completely useless.

Although:

1. Buffy's series arc is one of the greatest coming of age stories and probably the greatest heroine story in television.

2. Spikes developement from a one-off character to probably fan-favorite / third most important character in the Buffy-verse.

3. The Angelus arc is the greatest teen drama villain arc of all time.

4. The entire show is a carefully layed out metaphor for life as a teenager.

5. Took a Mediocre films brand and did something amazing with it.

^just to show I also love Buffy.

Now, Buffy's final season suffers similar problems TVDs does.

1. Spike was bad again for most of season 7.

2. Dawn is as useless as Matt.

3. Willow was pretty much stuck in the same story limbo that Caroline is.

4. Angel only showed up once, Elena will only show up once.

5. The Potnetial Slayers were just as annoying if not more than The Sirens.

The humanity-off switch (or rather humanity revolving door) is not a very good metric to show when a vampire is "good" or "bad" in this show.

Stefan went off the wagon in season 1.
He went off the wagon/turned off his humanity/whatever - went rogue in season 2.
He turned off his humanity in season 6.
He turned off his humanity/went ripper/worked for the devil/whatever in season 8.

4/8 times.

Damon.
LOL! Damon doesn't have to turn off his humanity to go evil.
He was the Big Bad in the first half of season 1.
He enslaved Andi Starr in season 2.
In seasons 3-4, he was sort of the hero… Then in season 5, we find out that he's been murdering Whitmore ALL ALONG…
Season 6 was actually his best season, strangely enough. But in season 7, he went bonkers when he came out of the Phoenix Stone - fight club, attacking Tyler, etc.
Season 8: Cade/sirens possession/ humanity-off switch, whatever.

That's 5/8 times.

Caroline & Elena have both turned off their switches once and been legit evil.

Enzo has turned off his humanity 2ce in his 4-season appearance, and has acted as an antagonist in 2.5 out of 4 seasons.

Other than the female regulars, the "good" vamps in this show have been evil as much as and sometimes even more than they've been good.

Thank you Orgine - that sounds more accurate - and makes it more ridiculous :/

You're kidding right????? Buffy is the greatest show of all time and TVD couldn't hold a candle to it - neither could Angel for that matter

Xander is the heart of the show - and if you think he was as useless as Matt then you clearly didn't get the point of the character (see 'Dirty Girls')

Buffy's first season was it's weakest - i agree - but there are alot more than 3 great episodes mate - also it was Joss' first foray into TV - if he was as good as he is now - season 1 would have been Firefly levels of good

Season 4 is F'n brilliant - it may have had Buffy's worst episode of the series but it also had one of the best - that's the good part about a show like Buffy - it could bounce back just like that

Give me an example of the inconsistencies of the Soul Lore please

Tara died once - how many times has Alaric died please????? and Enzo is currently in a forced relationship with another character that has died more times than Ric - Alaric shouldn't have come back - Matt Davis left for his own show and it failed miserably so they shoehorned him back into the show and Enzo has never been relevant - at least Dawn had a character arc - unlike Enzo

4. The entire show is a carefully layed out metaphor for life as a teenager.

And adult life (See: The Body and season 6)

Now, Buffy's final season suffers similar problems TVDs does.

1. Spike was bad again for most of season 7.

2. Dawn is as useless as Matt.

3. Willow was pretty much stuck in the same story limbo that Caroline is.

4. Angel only showed up once, Elena will only show up once.

5. The Potnetial Slayers were just as annoying if not more than The Sirens.

Spike's final season arc was 100% times better than Damon's - he got his soul back just for Buffy - and he doesn't have a shoehorned friendship with one of the characters - Damon and Bonnie's friendship was a result of Elena 'dying' - and it doesn't seem legitimate to me - it seems forced because of how he could just turn on her in an instant (see EVERY SINGLE SEASON)

Dawn did become useless - but i can forgive that considering she was the catalyst in the best season of Buffy - what has Matt ever done????

In what way was Willow's story arc a limbo kinda thing??? she was trying to keep her dark side at bay, trying to mend friendships, trying to find love again after losing the love of her life, and she had the most important job in the finale - wow you're so wrong there mate

Angel's appearance was to set-up Spike's arrival on 'Angel' without it coming out of nowhere
and it was also to have Buffy give her brilliant cookie dough analogy - and technically Angel appeared in two episodes haha

Agree about some Potential Slayers - but i like some of them - but at least they served a purpose in the end - judging from the newest episode - that was end of the Sirens - and what a pointless 10 episode arc that was

and you're also forgetting one thing - not one episode of TVD has entertained me this season - whereas i can name several episodes in Buffy's final season that where better than VD's final season in it's entirety

What? Who reviewed this crap lol. The last good season Vampire Diaries had was season six and they ruined it with the ending lol. I still think season two is there best season. Although I did personally like season five. But that is me.

Season 2 my personal favourite too
