They had a chance to rectify this when Nina's contracted time ran out but they choose to keep her 'alive' in the narrative with the sleeping beauty curse and "Dear Elena" journal entries by various characters.

I think this just proves the OP's point. TVD contorts its storylines and characters to focus on Elena to absurdly ridiculous degrees.

At the beginning of season one Stefan says this is my story. He is the main character.

He's not,the 3 of them were taking turns to say that.Elena is the main character

The first.They had to start with someone. But like I said the 3 of them took turn to do so. So no he's not.It's about a girl falling in love with two vampire brothers.That girl is Elena. Simple.
