Slightly OT - What's the smartest show you watch?

Or have watched.

I consider this to be the worst written thing I have in my regular line up.

I'm constantly explaining and rationalising why I watch it to people who know me. And I always feel like I have to say "I watch _____too." In a sort of attempt to justify myself. Like, "No, I'm not an insane person watching it because I think it's good."

I'm just curious as to what other people have in their lineup.

By smartest, I mean well written, intended for adult consumption, not a procedural on CBS or NBC, and lacking an easy sort sentence premise (eg, girl in love triangle with two vampire brothers).

Off the top of my head, I usually go with House of Cards (only watched the first season), Black Sails and now Billions.

Clever people will recognize and tolerate nothing but cleverness.

Fringe...

First two seasons of Person of Interest.

Firefly.. not sure if it is exactly smart but I enjoyed the writing.

As a disclaimer, I never flinch admitting what shows I watch. The Vampire Diaries isn't (as a whole) that bad. Supergirl, I dropped for being a bad show with any redeeming features left back in the first season. I watch what I watch. Don't be ashamed of what makes you happy to watch. I have no guilty pleasures, just things I enjoy watching.

Currently running shows would be Orphan Black, Jessica Jones and The Originals. I watch The Pretender, Farscape and so many other older shows. Some of the best shows have that one sentence premise and grow from that into complex, fascinating shows.

Black Mirror I guess.

Bojack Horseman?

reply

Lol, Bojack.

I can't watch it without thinking, "This is a cartoon about an alcoholic horse. But also it's a serious drama. They must have a team of genius writers behind this."

Better than Archer even. Probably...

reply

Hahaha. I'm used to adult animation so Bojack being a horse doesn't really phase me.

Out of the top of my head,
Still running:
Game of Thrones, amazing take on inter alias The War of the Roses, historic battles (Hannibal, The Second Arab Siege of Constantinople).

Homeland, terrorism + mental illness

Westworld, AI

Cancelled:
Westwing, politics

House of Lies, M&A

Person of Interest, conspiracy

TVD is not the only worst written show on TV basically almost the CW has the worst written shows ever: Arrow, Legends of tomorrow, Supergirl... I'm just like you watch crappy shows and then wonder why I do that when I know I have a good taste LOL. Here are the shows that I watch, watched and will be watching their next seasons:
Outlander
Stranger things
Daredevil
12 monkeys
Travelers
Poldark
Killjoys
The Americans
The OA
Only referring to shows that are still running. There are good ones that ended but the list will be too long.

reply

What's the OA about though? All the trailers I see look super vague.

reply

I don't want to spoil too much but it's about a blind girl that was missing for 7 years, she returns home and is not blind anymore. Throughout the series she tells her story to a couple of people from her town. It has this 80's 90's vibe to it. Kept me on the edge of my sit. Anyways I think there will be season 2 so check it out ;) Definitely written very well.

reply

Homeland (although it can get it very wrong).

House of Cards

The Good Place (check it out everyone, really good comedy!)

I think this show was well written and smart in the beginning but Julie Plec and Caroline Dries ruined it.

reply

What are you doing here? 
